Job summary

Techmezine in Bengaluru is seeking a hands-on Power Electronics Engineer to design space-grade EPS hardware, including BMS, PDU, and fault-tolerant power architectures for space missions.

You will develop high-efficiency DC-DC converters, integrate with CAN/SpaceWire interfaces, and perform TVAC, vibration, and ESS tests, while mentoring juniors and upholding EMI/EMC and reliability standards. The role emphasizes DFx and GaN/SiC-based architectures.

Qualifications

  • Education: BE/BTech/MTech in Electrical/Electronics or related discipline.
  • Experience: 2+ years in power electronics hardware design in aerospace or space systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design space-grade EPS hardware including BMS and PDU with fault-tolerant architecture.
  • Develop high-efficiency, high-density DC-DC converters (buck, boost, LLC, flyback) and motor drive electronics.
  • Integrate subsystems using CAN, SpaceWire, MIL-STD-1553B, SPI, I2C, RS422/RS485.
  • Perform simulation/modeling to improve efficiency, transient response, and control loops.
  • Follow DFM/ DFA/ DFR, manage mass, power and thermal constraints.
  • Hardware bring-up, testing and qualification (TVAC, vibration, ESS).
  • Conduct EMI/EMC analysis and select space-grade components.
  • Mentor juniors and maintain hardware documentation.
  • Promote GaN and SiC-based architectures.

Job description

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Power Electronics & EPS Architecture
  • Design and develop space-grade Electrical Power Systems (EPS), including solar array conditioning interfaces, Battery Management Systems (BMS), and reliable Power Distribution Units (PDU) with fault-tolerant architecture.
  • Develop high-efficiency, high-power-density DC-DC converters using various topologies such as buck, boost, LLC, and flyback, along with motor drive electronics for spacecraft applications.
  • Integrate spacecraft power subsystems using standard communication protocols like CAN, SpaceWire, MIL-STD-1553B, SPI, I2C, and RS422/RS485 to ensure seamless system communication.
  • Simulation, Modeling & Optimization
  • Perform simulation and modeling of complex power electronic circuits using LTSpice, PSpice, and MATLAB/Simulink to improve efficiency, transient response, and control loop stability.
  • Follow Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Reliability (DFR) principles while meeting strict mass, power, and thermal constraints.
  • Hardware Bring-Up, Testing & Qualification
  • Prepare and review circuit schematics, support multi-layer PCB layout reviews, and carry out hands-on hardware bring-up and validation in laboratory environments.
  • Conduct environmental qualification testing, including Thermal Vacuum (TVAC), vibration, shock, and Environmental Stress Screening (ESS), to verify hardware reliability.
  • Reliability, Compliance & Leadership
  • Perform Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Worst-Case Analysis (WCA), and component stress derating in accordance with space reliability standards.
  • Resolve EMI/EMC compliance challenges and select suitable radiation-hardened, space-grade components for mission-critical systems.
  • Mentor junior engineers, maintain high-quality hardware documentation, and encourage the adoption of advanced power technologies, including GaN and SiC-based architectures.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree (B.E./B.Tech/M.E./M.Tech) in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in power electronics hardware design, preferably within Aerospace, Defence Electronics, Space Systems, or other high-reliability industrial environments.
  • Power Electronics Hardware: Strong practical knowledge of Switched-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS), multi-topology DC-DC converters, GaN/Si MOSFETs, gate driver circuits, and analog/digital feedback control loops.
  • Design & Simulation Tools: Hands-on proficiency with LTSpice, PSpice, MATLAB/Simulink, and PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or KiCad.
  • Reliability & Standards: Good understanding of EMI/EMC design practices, thermal management, component derating, Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), and Worst-Case Analysis (WCA).
  • Soft Skills: Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, a quality-focused engineering approach, collaborative mindset, ownership, and effective technical communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications (Optional)
  • Space Standards Knowledge: Familiarity with ECSS or NASA standards related to space-grade electronics qualification, radiation-tolerant component selection, and derating methodologies.
  • Digital & Embedded Systems: Exposure to Microcontrollers (MCUs), DSPs, FPGAs, and digital power control techniques.
  • Advanced Avionics: Experience in designing payload power systems or satellite bus subsystems for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) space missions.
