Job description

Power BI Developer Semantic Modeling

As a Power BI Developer on the Data Services team, you will design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade reports, dashboards, and semantic models that transform curated data into trusted, actionable analytics. Sitting at the intersection of data engineering and the business, you will lead requirements discussions with stakeholders, finalize specifications, and deliver high-performance Power BI solutionsdriving data-informed decision-making across the organization. As our data and AI capabilities evolve rapidly, this role requires a growth mindset and the ability to quickly adopt and apply emerging AI tools and techniques to continuously improve how data is gathered, analyzed, and presented.

Key Responsibilities
Requirements & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Facilitate requirements discovery sessions—including workshops and stakeholder interviews to elicit, document, and validate reporting needs, KPIs, data definitions, and acceptance criteria before development begins.
  • Translate finalized business requirements into detailed report and model specifications (data source mapping, field definitions, filter logic, visual layout) for stakeholder sign-off, serving as the authoritative development blueprint.
  • Review and analyze data insights to provide guidance and recommendations to stakeholders and decision-makers; communicate status updates, risks, and blockers to leadership proactively.
  • Participate in product design reviews, agile ceremonies (stand-ups, refinement, sprints), and cross-functional collaboration with business analysts, data engineers, and non-technical business users.
Semantic Modeling & Development
  • Design, build, and maintain Power BI semantic models within Microsoft Fabric, defining measures, hierarchies, relationships, and row-level security (RLS) to support enterprise-wide reporting.
  • Design and implement advanced DAX measures, calculated columns, and KPIs; write standard SQL queries to support data extraction and validation.
  • Create and maintain interactive reports, dashboards, and visualizations that are visually compelling, user-friendly, and optimized for performance.
  • Integrate Power BI solutions with diverse data sources including databases, CRM systems, and cloud platforms.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate storage modes (Import, DirectQuery, Composite) and apply performance optimization techniques—including query folding, aggregations, incremental refresh, and model compression to ensure scalable, responsive solutions.
  • Apply object-level and column-level security (OLS/CLS) alongside RLS to enforce fine-grained data access controls aligned with organizational data governance and compliance requirements.
Quality, Delivery & Documentation
  • Follow a Development, Test, and Production deployment process; continuously improve testing practices and communicate test results to stakeholders.
  • Manage Power BI Service administration including workspace governance, deployment pipelines, scheduled data refresh, and on-premises data gateway configuration to ensure reliable, production-grade delivery.
  • Develop and maintain clear documentation of semantic models, datasets, report specifications, workspaces, and development processes.
  • Manage workload and project timelines independently while collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Finance, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience as a Power BI developer building reports, dashboards, and semantic/data models.
  • Proficiency in Power BI, DAX, Power Query, and semantic modeling concepts (measures, hierarchies, RLS, KPIs).
  • Strong understanding of data modeling schemas (star, snowflake, normalized, flat) and data governance best practices.
  • Skilled in requirements gathering, stakeholder facilitation, and producing business requirements documents (BRDs) and functional specifications that bridge business intent and technical delivery.
  • Ability to manage competing stakeholder priorities, negotiate scope, and drive consensus through structured review and sign-off processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to write standard SQL queries.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, work independently, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with version control and source control practices (e.g., Git, Azure DevOps) for Power BI assets and PBIP/TMDL file formats; familiarity with CI/CD pipeline concepts for analytics deployments.
  • Familiarity with data quality validation techniques—including profiling, reconciliation, and anomaly detection to ensure model outputs are accurate and stakeholders can trust the data being reported.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset with a strong commitment to continuous learning; ability to rapidly evaluate, adopt, and apply emerging AI tools and technologies as the organization’s data and AI capabilities evolve.
Preferred
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouses, Data Warehouses, medallion architecture).
  • Microsoft Power BI or related certifications.
  • Knowledge of agile methodologies.
  • Experience with AI-powered analytics, data science concepts, or ML model integration within Power BI or Microsoft Fabric.
  • Familiarity with Copilot in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric—including AI-assisted report generation, DAX suggestions, and natural language Q&A and a proactive mindset toward identifying where AI tools can reduce manual effort across the reporting lifecycle.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Copilot Studio) to accelerate DAX authoring, SQL query development, and automated test case generation.
  • Hands-on use of native AI visuals in Power BI—anomaly detection, Smart Narratives, forecasting, and Key Influencers—to surface insights automatically within reports.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouses, Data Warehouses, Dataflows Gen2, medallion architecture) as a consumer or contributor; understanding of how curated data layers support semantic model development.
