Job summary

HSBC Software Development India is seeking an experienced Sr. Consultant Specialist to run and improve day-to-day PostgreSQL DBA operations, owning availability, performance, capacity, and service health KPIs. You will provide on-call support, lead major incidents, and drive upgrades, migrations, and security controls.

The role emphasizes automation with Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD patterns, data modeling guidance, and collaboration with SRE/Platform teams as well as vendors.

Qualifications

• Strong hands-on PostgreSQL administration in enterprise production environments.
• Backup/restore and WAL management knowledge (pg_basebackup, pgBackRest).
• Replication (streaming/logical), failover concepts, HA tooling (Patroni/repmgr).
• Monitoring/observability using Prometheus/Grafana and pg_stat_statements.
• Change/incident management in controlled environments. Certification in cloud, Linux, or database domains.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Sr. Consultant Specialist.

In This Role, You Will

• Run and improve day-to-day DBA operations for PostgreSQL (incident, problem, change, and release support).
• Own database availability, performance, capacity, and service health KPIs/SLAs.
• Provide on‑call support (where applicable) and lead major incidents in technical recovery.
• Diagnose and resolve performance issues (query tuning, indexing strategy, vacuum/analyze, bloat management).
• Establish performance baselines and proactive monitoring/alerting. Design, implement, and operate HA/DR solutions (e.g., streaming replication, logical replication, load balancers).
• Define and test backup/restore and DR runbooks; conduct regular restore tests and DR exercises.
• Plan and execute upgrades and migrations with minimal downtime. Implement security controls: role‑based access, least privilege, encryption in transit/at rest (where supported), secrets management.
• Support audit requirements (logging, retention, evidence collection) and vulnerability remediation. Automate provisioning and configuration using Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform) and CI/CD patterns.
• Support schema changes, data fixes, and controlled releases (including rollback planning). Manage partitioning strategies, archiving, retention, and data growth planning.
• Provide guidance on data modelling and operational readiness for new applications. Partner with application teams, SRE/Platform, and vendors to deliver improvements. Produce clear technical documentation and communicate risk/impact to stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:

• Strong hands‑on PostgreSQL administration in enterprise production environments (typically 5+ years, adjust as needed).
• Deep knowledge of:
• Backup/restore (pg_basebackup, pgBackRest), PITR, WAL management
• Replication (streaming/logical), failover concepts, HA tooling (Patroni/repmgr)
• Performance tuning (EXPLAIN/ANALYSE, indexing, autovacuum tuning, bloat control)
• Upgrades and migrations (major/minor version upgrades, extension management)
• Monitoring/observability (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana, pg_stat_statements, logs).
• Change/incident management experience in controlled environments.
• Relevant certifications (cloud, Linux, or database‑related).
