Weekday (YC W21) is seeking an experienced Platform Backend Engineer to design and scale backend infrastructure powering enterprise AI and supply chain decision-intelligence products. The role spans core platform services, reusable APIs, and agentic systems used by product teams and AI agents in production.

Hiring is open at Associate to Staff levels based on ownership, depth, and impact. Location options include Bengaluru or Chennai, with a hybrid work model for collaboration and delivery

We are looking for a skilled Platform Backend Engineer to build and scale the backend infrastructure that powers enterprise AI and supply chain decision-intelligence products. The role involves developing core platform services, reusable APIs, execution frameworks, and agentic systems that enable product teams and AI agents to operate reliably in production.

You will take ambiguous technical problems from initial design through implementation, deployment, and continuous improvement. The work spans core backend platform engineering and the agentic layer, including frameworks for building and orchestrating AI agents and the agents built on top of them.

Hiring is open at both Senior and Staff levels, with the level determined by the scope of ownership, technical depth, and impact demonstrated.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

• Own platform capabilities end to end, from problem definition and architectural design to development, release, and continuous iteration
• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and reusable execution patterns that other engineering teams can build upon
• Develop robust data models and handle concurrency, failure recovery, performance optimization, and observability
• Build and improve the frameworks used to develop, execute, and orchestrate AI agents
• Develop production-ready agent loops, tool integrations, orchestration mechanisms, and user-facing experiences built on agentic systems
• Translate ambiguous business and technical requirements into practical, maintainable engineering solutions
• Debug complex production issues, identify root causes, and improve system reliability based on real-world behaviour
• Make sound technical decisions around system design, APIs, databases, and underlying execution mechanisms
• Collaborate with product teams and other engineers to deliver reusable platform capabilities that support multiple downstream consumers
• Take ownership of production systems, monitor their performance, and evolve their architecture as requirements and usage change
• Communicate design decisions, trade-offs, implementation details, and technical challenges clearly across teams

Required Skills And Qualifications

• Strong fundamentals in backend engineering, including problem decomposition, data structures, low-level design, and debugging
• Hands-on experience building and owning production-grade backend systems
• Ability to explain system behaviour beyond the framework layer, including API design, database interactions, concurrency, and failure handling
• Experience taking technical projects from initial design through production deployment and subsequent improvements
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate ambiguous requirements without relying on predefined solutions
• A practical, hands-on approach to engineering, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability
• Clear communication skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions, trade-offs, and production incidents
• Experience working in a startup or similarly fast-paced environment where engineers are expected to take initiative and deliver end-to-end solutions
