Job summary

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is recruiting a part‑time Phlebotomist for Gartnavel General Hospital. This role involves venepuncture, sample labelling, and safe transport of specimens within acute services.

The post requires compassionate communication with patients and effective teamwork to maintain service standards. The successful candidate will work part‑time hours on a permanent basis, with pro rata salary.

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde as a Phlebotomist, providing an essential service that directly supports patient diagnosis, treatment and care. Based within Acute Services, you will work across hospital wards collecting blood specimens and ensuring samples are delivered safely and efficiently to laboratory services. Band 2 roles are not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa routes.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
  • Part‑time, Permanent
  • You will be based at Gartnavel General Hospital
  • We have various hours available - x2 25‑hour positions and x3 20 hour positions
  • Working Pattern: TBC

Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part‑time hours.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect blood samples from patients using venepuncture and capillary sampling techniques
  • Accurately identify patients and ensure all samples and accompanying documentation are correctly labelled
  • Support the timely delivery of blood specimens to laboratories to meet service targets
  • Adhere to all departmental policies and procedures including Infection Control and Health & Safety requirements
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and multidisciplinary teams to provide reassurance and support
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels of equipment and consumables required to deliver the service
  • Provide cover for colleagues during periods of annual leave or absence to ensure continuity of service
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
  • Educated to Standard Grade level or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Previous experience working in a healthcare environment would be advantageous
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact confidently and compassionately with patients and staff
  • Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to work efficiently under pressure
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also using your own initiative
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail when handling patient information and samples
  • Reliable, self‑motivated and committed to delivering a high‑quality patient‑centred service
