Job summary

Burns & McDonnell India in Bengaluru seeks a Network Engineer to lead telecom design, upgrade legacy equipment, and coordinate cross-functional teams.

You will prepare network diagrams, BOMs, cutover plans from TDM to packet, implement MPLS, QoS, and DWDM, and ensure documentation throughout the project lifecycle. 5–8 years telecom/network experience and strong communication are required.

Qualifications

  • 5–8 years of experience in telecommunication engineering or network engineering.
  • Degree in EE or EXTC.
  • Utility network experience would be an added advantage.
  • Hands-on experience with reputed MPLS devices.
  • Knowledge of QoS, MPLS services, PTP synchronization, circuit emulation, and packet network architecture.
  • Experience with Microsoft Visio, Excel, and Word.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in Teleprotection couplers in the utility grid.
  • Knowledge of IP networking protocols for routing and switching.
  • Legacy technologies: TDM, SONET, and serial communications.
  • DWDM and wireless transport technologies.
  • MPLS-TP & MPLS-IP knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage network upgrades and legacy tech replacement.
  • Conduct site surveys to determine router types and power requirements.
  • Draft designs, scope of work, and BOMs for installs.
  • Develop high-level and detailed designs for complex utility grid networks.
  • Prepare MPLS configurations and network diagrams.
  • Maintain documentation across project lifecycle and ensure milestones.

Job description

Network Engineer

The Network Engineer will be responsible for leading and managing the team in executing the following work:

  • Supporting network upgrades by replacing legacy telecommunication equipment and time division multiplexing (TDM) era technology
  • Applying networking principles to assess the type of networking equipment needed on-site to support the site’s needs. Router type, router cards, small form-factor pluggable (SFP), and power requirements will be determined utilizing site survey notes, pictures, 3D scans, and correspondence with site surveyor/design leads
  • Design functions will include assessing what networking components are necessary, detailing and drafting designs, developing scope of work for installs, assembling part/equipment bill of material (BOM) requests, and supporting design discussions
  • Develop high-level and detailed designs for complex, full-scale utility grid networks.
  • Apply telecom principles to develop resilient network solutions, effectively use network protocols and protection scenarios, maintain attention to detail, and ensure the quality of all deliverables.
  • Prepare configurations for MPLS, switches, routers, SONET, etc.
  • Perform network analysis of existing grid networks and prepare cutover package solution for channel migration from TDM to packet.
  • Prepare detailed network block diagram in detail considering new installation (MPLS nodes) as per the scope, removal of old equipment, fiber plan, channel plan, synchronization plan, circuit audits, network topology drawing, DC calculation, panel elevation, QoS values etc.
  • Maintain documentation throughout the full project lifecycle, including design revisions, change management, preliminary and construction packages, as-built documents, and transmittal records with the client.
  • Maintain seamless communication with cross-functional project stakeholders, team members, and counterparts.
  • Ensure project milestones are met on time through effective action planning.

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) or Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (EXTC)
  • 5-8 years of experience in telecommunication engineering or network engineering.
  • Utility network experience would be an added advantage. The candidate should have handled utility upgrade projects in design, testing, or commissioning activities.
  • Hands-on experience with reputed MPLS devices.
  • Knowledge about implementation of QoS, Label engineering, MPLS services, PTP synchronization, circuit emulation, packet network architecture, resilient protection scenarios.
  • Experience with Microsoft Visio, Excel, and Word.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in Teleprotection couplers in the utility grid.
  • Knowledge of different IP Networking protocols for routing, switching.
  • Legacy Telecommunications Technology (time division multiplexing (TDM), Synchronous optical networking (SONET), serial communication)
  • Network Transport Technology (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), Microwave, etc.)
  • Modern Networking Technology (Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) packet networking) – MPLS-TP & MPLS-IP.
Desired Skills / Experience
  • Technical Certification by Nokia, Cisco, or other reputable networking certification entity- would be an added advantage.
  • Experience, certifications, or formal education in networking, computing, or electrical engineering
  • Knowledge of different amplifiers in telecom networks and their integration with transport nodes.
  • Familiarity with firewall usage and different applications in OT networking.
  • Familiarity with electric utility supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems or Operational Technology (OT) environments.
