Job description

OrbitAID Aerospace is building the foundation for a new era of on-orbit servicing and refueling, enabling satellites to operate longer, maneuver more freely, and deliver greater value in space. At the core of this vision is the development of standardized docking and refueling technologies and a future network of orbital fuel stations, transforming how spacecraft are designed, launched, and sustained in orbit.
Our long-term goal is to make space operations more flexible, resilient, and sustainable—where satellites are serviced, upgraded, and refueled rather than replaced. We are a small, highly motivated team that values strong engineering fundamentals, ownership, and hands-on problem solving. At OrbitAID, you’ll work across disciplines, rapidly iterate from concept to hardware, and directly contribute to building the robotic infrastructure required for future space missions.

Role Overview

The Mechatronics Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, and integration of electromechanical and robotic systems for space applications. This includes actuated mechanisms, robotic manipulators, docking systems, and autonomous servicing subsystems used in satellite operations.
The role requires a strong balance between mechanical design, electronics integration, and control systems, with a focus on building reliable hardware that can operate in the challenging conditions of the space environment. The engineer will work closely with mechanical, avionics, software, and systems teams to develop flight-ready robotic hardware.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop electromechanical subsystems for space robotics applications including robotic arms, docking mechanisms, deployment systems, and satellite servicing tools
  • Integrate actuators, motors, sensors, encoders, and motor controllers into robotic systems and mechanisms
  • Develop and implement motion control systems for robotic subsystems, including motor control and feedback loops
  • Design mechanical components and assemblies for robotic systems using industry-standard CAD tools
  • Work with embedded systems and avionics teams to integrate control electronics, microcontrollers, and communication interfaces
  • Participate in system architecture development for robotic platforms used in satellite servicing and orbital operations
  • Support prototype development, including assembly, wiring, and integration of robotic subsystems
  • Plan and conduct functional testing, calibration, and validation of robotic hardware and electromechanical systems
  • Support environmental testing including vibration, thermal, and vacuum testing for space qualification
  • Analyze test data and system performance to improve reliability, precision, and robustness of robotic systems
  • Document design specifications, system architecture, test procedures, and engineering reports
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in mechatronics & strong understanding of electromechanical system design and robotics fundamentals
  • Experience integrating motors, actuators, sensors, and embedded electronics into working systems
  • Familiarity with control systems, motion control, and feedback mechanisms
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or CATIA
  • Ability to work hands-on with hardware prototyping, integration, and testing
Preferred / Highly Desired Skills
  • Experience with robotic manipulators, precision mechanisms, or motion control systems
  • Familiarity with embedded platforms (Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, or similar)
  • Experience working with robotics frameworks such as ROS (Robot Operating System)
  • Knowledge of motor drivers, PID control, and actuator selection
  • Experience integrating vision systems, sensors, or feedback systems in robotics
  • Familiarity with system-level integration of mechanical, electrical, and software components
Nice to Have
  • Hands-on experience with robotics research, robotics competitions, or advanced student projects
  • Experience with robotic prototyping, rapid hardware development, or automation systems
  • Exposure to space systems, CubeSats, or aerospace hardware development
  • Understanding of space environment constraints such as thermal extremes, vacuum conditions, and launch vibration
  • Strong interest in space robotics, on-orbit servicing, autonomous spacecraft, and future orbital infrastructure
