Qualifications

• 12+ years in software engineering with delivery leadership in large-scale enterprises.
• Proven mainframe modernization track record (re-platforming, refactoring, replacement, strangler pattern).
• Deep COBOL and core mainframe tech expertise (CICS, IMS, DB2, JCL, VSAM).
• Experience leading complex engagements across multiple teams/vendors with executive stakeholder management.
• Experience implementing GenAI-assisted SDLC use cases with governance.
• Ability to define target-state architecture, integration patterns, data/messaging, resiliency, and non-functional requirements.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Mainframe Modernization Expert to lead the technical delivery of complex, enterprise-wide programs that modernize legacy systems. You will bring deep mainframe expertise, modern architecture skills and GenAI-enabled engineering to take clients from assessment through cutover onto modern platforms. You will also lead global teams and work with senior stakeholders to shape solution strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Delivery leadership: Own and closely manage the end-to-end delivery of modernization programs, from scoping and estimation through execution, so that projects finish on time and within budget.
• Solution strategy: Work with client and internal leadership to shape solution strategies that support key business objectives.
• Technical oversight: Provide expert guidance across the technical delivery lifecycle. Steer architectural decisions, drive engineering best practices and make sure solutions meet quality standards.
• People leadership: Lead and manage multidisciplinary, globally distributed teams, and act as a senior coach and mentor to managers and junior staff.
• Governance and reporting: Track program progress, manage risks before they become problems and provide status reporting to executives.
• Business development: Support sales and business development by contributing to proposals and offering solution insights.

Must-Have Skills and Experience

• Experience: 12+ years in software engineering, including delivery leadership in large-scale enterprise environments.
• Modernization track record: Proven success delivering mainframe modernization with approaches such as re-platforming, refactoring, replacement and the strangler pattern. This should cover the full journey from assessment through cutover and stabilization on modern architectures and platforms.
• Mainframe expertise: Deep, hands-on experience with COBOL and core mainframe technologies such as CICS, IMS, DB2, JCL and VSAM, including performance and batch processing considerations.
• Program leadership: Experience leading complex engagements across multiple teams and vendors, with ownership of scope, plans, RAID, budgets and executive stakeholder management.
• AI in engineering: Experience implementing GenAI-assisted SDLC use cases (code modernization, test generation, documentation, defect triage) with measurable outcomes and clear governance.
• Architecture: Ability to define target-state architecture, integration patterns, data and messaging, resiliency, and non-functional requirements (security, latency, throughput, RTO/RPO).
• Delivery and governance: Agile/SAFe delivery leadership, strong quality engineering, release and change management, and awareness of risk and compliance requirements such as auditability and SDLC controls.

• Research and innovation: Follows the latest research in mainframe modernization, Generative AI and Agentic AI, and can turn breakthrough approaches into innovative solutions and thought leadership.
• Domain expertise: Deep understanding of business use cases in one or more industry sectors or sub-sectors.
• Technical mentorship: Proven record of mentoring senior teams and driving technical excellence across large-scale programs.
