Long-Term Substitute Teacher: High School English
Position Overview
Manhattan Christian School is seeking a dedicated and engaging Long-Term Substitute Teacher for High School English. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to step into an established academic program, support students during an important period of learning, and teach a diverse range of English and communication courses in a Christ-centered school community.
The successful candidate will provide consistent instruction, classroom leadership, and student support while maintaining course continuity and collaborating with school staff.
The timing of the positions is anticipated to be early January 2027 through mid-March of 2027.
Courses & Responsibilities
The long-term substitute will teach the following courses:
- Freshman English: Develop students’ foundational skills in reading, writing, grammar, literary analysis, research, and communication.
- AP Seminar: Guide students in analyzing complex sources, evaluating perspectives, conducting research, developing evidence-based arguments, and presenting ideas clearly.
- Speech: Help students build confidence and competence in public speaking, organization, delivery, audience awareness, and formal presentations.
- Novel Studies: Lead students in close reading, literary discussion, interpretation, theme analysis, and written responses to selected novels.
- Yearbook: Supervise the planning and production of the school yearbook, including writing, editing, photography coordination, page design, deadlines, and collaboration with student staff.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, English/Language Arts, education, or a related field preferred.
- Strong subject-area knowledge in English/Language Arts, literature, composition, and communication preferred.
- Experience with AP coursework, especially AP Seminar, preferred.
- Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with high school students and maintain an orderly, engaging classroom.

- Model Christian character, professionalism, and integrity. Successful completion of required background checks and school employment requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver planned instruction and maintain continuity with the established curriculum.
- Prepare lessons, facilitate discussions, assign meaningful work, and provide timely feedback.
- Teach students to read critically, write effectively, speak confidently, and support ideas with relevant evidence.
- Establish clear expectations and maintain a positive, respectful, and well-managed classroom environment.
- Monitor student progress through assignments, discussions, presentations, projects, and assessments.
- Maintain accurate attendance, grading, and classroom records.
- Communicate appropriately with students, families, administrators, and colleagues.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to support student learning and school-wide expectations.
- Support Manhattan Christian School’s mission through instruction, mentorship, and professional conduct.
