Job summary

AMD's Server Software and Solution engineering team seeks a seasoned Linux kernel engineer to design and develop core CPU/SOC features for the Linux kernel and related open-source projects on the AMD EPYC platform. You will engage with upstream communities and drive performance-focused PMU work.

A deep OS foundation and expert C/x86 skills, plus open-source workflow experience, are essential. You will partner with global teams to deliver high-performance, scalable systems.

Qualifications

• 9+ years Linux kernel development experience.
• Strong OS concepts and Linux kernel knowledge.
• Proficient in C and x86 assembly for kernel development.
• Familiar with Open-Source development workflows.
• Experience with KVM/QEMU is a plus.

Linux Kernel Development engineer - Perf, PMU, Core, Cache, Fabric and Virtualization

THE ROLE:

The AMD Server Software and Solution engineering team is seeking a passionate Linux Kernel Engineer in our Linux Server Operating Systems team - bring a willingness to learn and absorb new concepts and technologies, along with a deep understanding of computer architecture and operating system concepts designed for the x86-64 architecture. Design and develop core CPU and SOC features for the Linux kernel and related open-source projects. This opportunity gets you involved in all phases of software development. Work with the upstream Linux Kernel community to get these features merged into the mainline Linux Kernel. Seeking expert that will focus on Linux Performance Monitor Unit (PMU) for Core cache and Fabric and virtualization.

THE PERSON:

A seasoned Linux kernel leader with a strong grounding in operating systems concepts who will develop skills to deliver responsive and efficient solutions that bring new AMD processors to market. Utilize polished written and verbal communication to work with both local and global colleagues towards a common end goal.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Join Linux Performance Monitoring (PMU), Core Cache and virtualization team focus to enhance and optimize the Linux kernel for AMD EPYC CPUs.
• Drive features and functionality to our partner technical teams including the Linux kernel community.
• Work with Hardware Architects to design, prototype and develop key performance metric evaluation frameworks for upcoming AMD platforms.
• Work with upstream on maintaining Perf events subsystems in general and specifically for AMD hardware.
• Support the solutions offered by our partner companies. Review code, build unit tests, and write detailed documentation.
• Collaborate across the stack with hardware, firmware and power aware application stack teams.
• Lead collaborative approaches with global teams

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

• 9+ years of Experience in Linux kernel development
• Deep understanding of operating systems, with emphasis on Linux kernel and proven leader in Linux kernel development and process.
• Expert insider knowledge of the Linux community and Open-Source Software development workflow.
• Highly skilled in C and x86 assembly programming for operating system kernel & systems development.
• Understanding of low-level software, such as BIOS/UEFI/firmware is a strong advantage.
• Exposure to KVM/QEMU (including x86-64 virtualization extensions) is a plus.
• Knowledge and experience with the GNU toolchain and git are a bonus.
• Deep understanding of operating systems concepts, data structures, and at least one general-purpose processor architecture (knowledge of x86-64 architecture is a bonus).
• A keen eye to learn and absorb new concepts is desirable.
• Excellent Communication and Presentation skills.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

• Bachelors or master's degree in electrical or computer engineering.
• Master's degree preferred.
