Job summary

Capital One is seeking a Lead Software Engineer in Bangalore to lead AI/ML platform initiatives, design production APIs and backend services, and guide teams across product, design and data science.

You will build scalable AI-enabled applications, oversee observability and governance, and mentor other engineers in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required in a relevant field.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• 8+ years building backend services (Java/JS/Python/Go/Node/Scala/TS).
• 4+ years designing data intensive solutions & distributed computing.
• 4+ years building APIs/SDKs for downstream use.
• 3+ years building or integrating AI/ML solutions including GenAI/LLMs.

Responsibilities

• Lead a portfolio of diverse technology projects with distributed systems and microservices.
• Partner with product, design, data science, and engineering teams to deliver scalable AI/ML platforms.
• Design and develop production-grade APIs, SDKs, libraries, and developer tools.

The Machine Learning eXperience (MLX) team is at the forefront of how Capital One builds and deploys responsible GenAI and ML models; we onboard and educate associates on the GenAI and ML platforms and products that the whole company uses; we drive new innovation and research; and we’re working to seamlessly infuse GenAI and ML into the fabric of the company. The AI experience we're creating is the foundation upon which our lines of business will continue to deliver next-generation machine learning-driven products and services for our more than 100MM customers.

What You’ll Do:

• Lead a portfolio of diverse technology projects with deep experience in distributed systems, microservices, platform engineering, and AI/ML applications.
• Partner with product, design, data science, and engineering teams to define and deliver scalable AI/ML platform capabilities and developer experiences.
• Design and develop production-grade APIs, SDKs, libraries, microservices, and developer tools that enable teams to build, integrate, evaluate, and operate AI/ML applications.
• Build and integrate GenAI capabilities including LLMs, RAG, agents, tool use, orchestration, inference, and AI evaluation into enterprise platforms and applications.
• Develop capabilities for LLM/AI observability, evaluation, monitoring, and responsible AI, including quality, reliability, safety, and performance.
• Utilize various programming languages, Open Source technologies, relational/NoSQL databases, containers, Kubernetes, and a variety of AWS tools and services with a focus on scalable and serverless solutions.
• Provide support to existing users of the platforms/ products you own.
• Share your passion for staying on top of technology trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, and mentoring other members of the engineering community.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree
• At least 10 years of experience in software engineering
• At least 8 years of experience building back-end services (Including but not limited to: Java, JavaScript, Python, Go, Node, Scala, TypeScript)
• At least 6 years of experience with a database technology (Including but not limited to: MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Cassandra, DynamoDB)
• At least 4 years of experience designing and building data intensive solutions using distributed computing and knowledge of event-driven development
• At least 4 years of experience in building Software Development Kits, APIs, packages, or libraries for downstream consumption, with understanding of Object-Oriented Programming concepts.
• At least 3 years of experience building or integrating AI/ML solutions, including GenAI, LLMs, RAG, ML platforms, or AI-enabled applications
• At least 4 years of experience in designing and building cloud-based platforms or distributed systems using AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud

Preferred Qualifications:

• 8+ years of experience with a cloud computing provider (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)
• 3+ years of experience in MLOps either using open source tools like MLFlow or commercial tools
• 2+ years of experience building production-ready AI/ML capabilities for large-scale platforms
• 2+ years of experience with LLM observability, evaluation, experimentation, inference optimization or model monitoring
• 2+ years of experience building agentic workflows, AI orchestration, RAG systems or tool-using AI applications
• Hands-on implementation of responsible AI, building solution for guard rails, model explainability, fairness and governance.
• 4+ Years of experience in a technical leadership role overseeing strategic projects
• Experience building developer tools, APIs, SDKs, or frameworks using technologies such as OpenTelemetry or similar observability frameworks; familiarity with AI/ML libraries and frameworks such as LangChain, Haystack, vector databases, or other emerging GenAI technologies is a plus
