About the role

As a Laureate Software Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for Blackbaud’s core products, helping shape the future of our products.. You’ll operate as a senior technical authority, influencing architecture, quality, and long‑term technical direction across teams while partnering closely with Product, Architecture, and Engineering leaders. This role is ideal for a seasoned engineer who thrives on solving complex problems at scale, modernizing legacy systems, and mentoring senior engineers to deliver highly reliable, secure, and performant SaaS solutions, while intentionally leveraging AI‑assisted development practices across the full software lifecycle.

What you’ll be doing:

• Help drive the long‑term architectural strategy for Blackbaud’s products, balancing scalability, performance, security, and regulatory requirements
• Design and evolve foundational components and services that support event management and fund‑raising
• Provide technical leadership across teams, guiding design decisions and promoting consistent, high‑quality engineering practices
• Partner with Product Management to translate complex requirements into robust, maintainable technical solutions
• Lead modernization efforts, including legacy system refactoring, cloud‑native architecture adoption, and technical debt reduction
• Champion the responsible and effective use of AI coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, similar tools) across day‑to‑day development
• Establish expectations for using AI in code reviews, including: Identifying defects, edge cases, and performance issues, Improving readability, consistency, and adherence to architectural standards, Assisting with risk identification in production and compliance‑sensitive code paths
• Promote the use of AI to accelerate and strengthen testing, including: Generating and refining unit, integration, and regression tests, Identifying gaps in test coverage, especially in legacy or high‑risk areas, Supporting test modernization as systems are refactored or decomposed
• Leverage AI tools during legacy modernization efforts to: Analyze and understand complex or poorly documented legacy code, Assist with refactoring, decomposition, and translation to modern patterns, Reduce risk while improving speed and confidence in large‑scale changes
• Guide teams on safe, compliant, and maintainable use of AI tools within enterprise, security, and regulatory constraints
• Establish and uphold engineering standards for reliability, observability, testing, and operational excellence
• Collaborate with cross‑functional stakeholders (Product, Security, Compliance, Support) to ensure solutions meet business and regulatory needs
• Mentor Principal and Senior Engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and continuous improvement
• Stay current on trends in complex systems, SaaS architecture, and developer productivity tooling, and apply them pragmatically within Blackbaud

What we’ll want you to have:

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including leadership roles on complex, enterprise‑scale systems
• Deep experience designing and delivering enterprise software
• Proven ability to lead architectural discussions and influence technical direction across multiple teams
• Strong expertise in Java, Oracle, and modern backend architecture patterns
• Experience with relational and NoSQL data stores (e.g., SQL Server, Cosmos DB) and RESTful API design
• Proficiency with modern web technologies, including Angular, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS
• Able to work flexible hours as required by business priorities
• Ability to deliver work which meets all minimum requirements for quality, security and operability
• AI‑assisted development experience
• Hands‑on experience using AI‑powered development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar
• Demonstrated ability to apply AI tools effectively in: Code authoring and refactoring, Code reviews and quality improvement, Test generation and coverage enhancement, Legacy system analysis and modernization
• Experience setting team‑level expectations and guardrails for AI usage to ensure code quality, security, and compliance
• Experience building and operating cloud‑based SaaS platforms, preferably on Microsoft Azure
• Solid understanding of data modeling, transactional systems, reporting, and integration patterns
• Strong grasp of software quality practices, including automated testing, performance tuning, and production monitoring
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences
• A collaborative mindset and a passion for mentoring and developing other engineers
