Job description

About Ummeed:

Ummeed, a premier non-profit organization working with children with disabilities and their families in India. The organization supports children with developmental disabilities to reach their maximum potential and be included in society.

India has over 50 million children with disabilities. With access to appropriate health, intervention, education, recreation, and livelihood services they can be supported to become participative members of society. Today most of them have limited or no access to relevant knowledge and services as the number of organizations and professionals in the space are inadequate to meet the need.

Over the past 25 years, Ummeed has provided direct clinical services to 16,400+ children and families, trained over 14,600 unique professionals (community workers, doctors, therapists, and teachers) across India, and influenced the lives of over 0.73 million children and families with or at risk of developmental disabilities. In addition to direct clinical services, training, and capacity building, Ummeed s conducts research in the field of child development, and builds awareness to sensitize people to the cause and shift attitudes towards disability and inclusion. As Ummeed looks to the future, its goal is to build on this past work to drive strategic shifts across three key ecosystems - Healthcare, Schools, and Early Childhood Development - to create a more inclusive society for children with and at high likelihood of disabilities in India.

Context of the work:

During the period from birth to three years a child s brain develops most rapidly and lays the foundation for health, wellbeing, learning and productivity throughout life. During this period a child s brain is also most susceptible to environmental influences such as those related to poverty. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) conducted in 2015-16, more than 55% of children in India under 5 years have anemia, 38.4% are stunted, 35% are underweight, and more than 20% suffer from malnutrition. While these are overall statistics for the country, the status in rural and underserved communities is worse than urban areas.

These factors compounded by poverty, lack of information and resources increase the risk, precluding these children from achieving their optimal development potential to become contributing members of society.

There is, thus, an urgent need for early childhood programs that incorporate and address health, nutrition, security, responsive caregiving and opportunities for early learning.

About the Early Childhood Development and Disabilities team s:

Ummeed has developed programs that creates and strengthens capacities in organisations for promotion of early child development. The program is delivered at different levels:
