Overview

Position: Staff Nurse ICU

Reports To: Ward Manager

Key Responsibilities
  • Service - Deliver safe and quality nursing care in conformance with Sir HN RFH policies and processes. Ensure patient safety at all times, protect patient privacy and confidentiality, treat patients and their families with courtesy, respect and caring behavior. Take immediate action to resolve issues or distress and escalate as needed. Welcome and orient the patient to the admitted unit and ensure comfort. Conduct initial nursing assessment within 30 minutes of arrival and complete within 2 hours. Reassess at the beginning of each shift and for long-stay patients every 30 days. Demonstrate clinical skills in various nursing procedures. Ensure smooth functioning of the ICU. Complete pain assessment and intervene as required. Identify vulnerable patients and provide appropriate care. Assess risk of pressure ulcers and implement preventive measures. Administer medications as per doctor’s prescription and document in EMR. Accompany consultants during rounds and assist with bedside procedures. Provide Basic Life Support in emergencies. Demonstrate critical thinking for patient care decisions. Ensure safe care and handling of patients with invasive devices. Read/verify all critical alerts and document with clinical intervention. Coordinate admission, transfer and discharge processes within defined timelines. Provide end-of-life care and maintain accurate medical records. Activate CODE BLUE if the patient is unresponsive. Identify early warning signs and activate MET calls as defined. Participate in disaster situations. Conduct hourly or frequent rounds as needed. Maintain patient hygiene and provide care for post-operative and bed-bound patients. Accompany patients with high acuity, tubes, lines and bed-bound patients for transfer. Educate patient and family about the plan of nursing care during stay and at discharge. Ensure all clinical consents are uploaded in the EMR. Ensure safe handling and handover of diagnostic reports at discharge and document in discharge checklist. Initiate MLC for all MLC cases and complete discharge notifications as per policy. Update MRD files and hand over within 24 hours of discharge. Provide respectful death care to deceased patients and hand over to relatives or mortuary as required and document accordingly. Any other responsibilities assigned by the ICU manager.
  • Growth - Ensure patient satisfaction per hospital parameters. Align with hospital processes, policies, vision and mission. Enhance patient care and relatives experience to make RFH the preferred choice.
  • Quality - Ensure nursing and infection control quality indicators meet defined benchmarks. Actively participate in infection control, campaigns and awareness sessions. Implement quality programs to ensure continuous quality improvement.
  • Finance - Use available resources (drugs and consumables) effectively. Ensure proper utilization of ward stock and maintain charging/stock records. Ensure safe handling of CSSD and biomedical equipment and prevent breakages.
  • People - Attend in-service nursing/hospital trainings. Assist in orientation of new nursing staff and supervise for safe patient care. Supervise PCAs/PTAs and ensure patient care. Ensure effective patient care delivery and collaboration with other disciplines. Participate in training for freshers/new joinees and convey hospital policies and protocols. Ensure effective communication with health care team members, including hands-off, shift handovers, interdepartmental transfers, and verification of verbal/telephonic orders.
  • Innovations and Research - Identify and suggest ideas to enhance departmental operations and patient care. Plan and participate in clinical education, research and clinical tests to advance nursing practice as required by the hospital.
Competencies and Qualifications

  • Desirable: Certification in BLS/ACLS; Critical Care.
  • Relevant Experience: Minimum 3 to 4 years of clinical experience in the relevant area. For super specialist/specialist areas, minimum 2 years in the respective work area.
