What is Insurance Underwriter?
An insurance underwriter assesses risk for insurance applications — deciding whether to provide coverage, at what price and under what conditions. Underwriters evaluate data about applicants' health, property, business or vehicle to determine the likelihood of claims. In India, the insurance industry is growing rapidly as penetration rises from a low base. Life insurance, general insurance and health insurance companies all employ underwriters. It is a stable, analytical career with strong government sector options through LIC.
Is this right for you?
For Commerce or PCM students with strong analytical thinking, attention to detail and comfort with risk frameworks. Insurance underwriting is methodical and data-driven — if you enjoy systematic evaluation and decision-making based on evidence, underwriting suits you. The actuarial track is a parallel, more mathematical path for those with stronger quantitative ability.
