Job summary

The Hartford is seeking an IND Senior Staff Engineer to join the Customer Data Engineering team. You will design, implement, and operate large-scale, fault-tolerant systems in the AWS Cloud, with a focus on real-time data ingestion using Apache Flink and Java.

You will build microservices with Java 21, Flink, Iceberg, and Spring Boot, while shaping observability, SLOs, and CI/CD pipelines with AWS tools. The role emphasizes IaC with Terraform or CloudFormation and resilience through chaos

Qualifications

• 10+ years of hands-on experience in application software development.
• Hands-on experience building microservices with Java 21, Apache Flink, Apache Iceberg, and the Spring Framework.
• Hands-on experience with Docker and AWS services, including security/IAM, Kinesis, and other AWS services.
• Hands-on experience building CI/CD pipelines using AWS tools (CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy).
• IaC experience using Terraform and/or AWS CloudFormation.
• Experience with observability tooling such as Splunk or Dynatrace is a plus.
• Familiarity with large-scale, complex projects and modern AI engineering practices.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement streaming and batch applications using Java and Apache Flink.
• Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot issues, implement code fixes, and execute unit and integration tests.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using AWS CodePipeline (and related services).
• Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform and/or AWS CloudFormation.
• Define strategies for application performance monitoring, resiliency, and chaos engineering.
• Define service-level objectives (SLOs) and build observability dashboards to monitor SLIs and trigger alerts.
• Perform fault-injection experiments to uncover hidden defects and identify blind spots in monitoring.
• Contribute to system design, capacity planning, and use-case reviews.
• Apply AI tools and techniques throughout the SDLC.

This role sits within the Customer Data Engineering team, which blends software and systems engineering to build and operate large-scale, fault-tolerant systems in the AWS Cloud. The Software Engineer helps ensure that The Hartford's Employee Benefits Data Integration Services-both internally critical and externally visible systems-are resilient and have reliability, availability, and innovation aligned to customer needs.

Much of the work will focus on designing, implementing, and deploying a distributed streaming application that ingests real-time data into the AWS Cloud using Apache Flink. In this role, you will help address complex scale challenges unique to the Employee Benefits domain, using your expertise in data structures, algorithms, and large-scale system design.

• Hands-on experience with Docker and AWS services, including Security/IAM, Kinesis, Lambda, RDS, and resiliency patterns.
• Hands-on experience building CI/CD pipelines using AWS tools - CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy.
• Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform and/or AWS CloudFormation.
• Hands-on experience with Observability tools such as Splunk and Dynatrace.
• Familiarity with modern AI Engineering practices such as vibe coding, spec-driven development, and AI agents (MCP servers and agent skills).
