Job summary

Phenom seeks a Geologist for Pumped Storage Projects to lead geological and geotechnical investigations from desktop studies to field mapping and borehole campaigns. You will evaluate rock mass conditions, reservoir seepage, slope stability, and seismic setting to ensure safe, feasible, and bankable designs.

Liaise with GSI and institutes for validation and support design teams with foundation treatment and tunnel works.

Qualifications

• MSc/MTech in Geology, Applied Geology, or Engineering Geology (BSc/BTech considered with strong relevant experience).
• 6–10 years of geological/geotechnical investigations experience in hydropower, PSP, dams, tunnels, or large infrastructure projects preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct desktop studies (toposheets, satellite imagery, DEM analysis) to shortlist reservoir sites for PSP.
• Carry out field geological mapping, reconnaissance surveys, and site reconnaissance for dam, waterway, powerhouse, and reservoir locations.
• Plan and supervise geotechnical investigations — boreholes, drifts/adits, trenches, seismic surveys, rock mass classification.
• Assess reservoir seepage, slope stability, landslide potential, and seismic/tectonic setting.
• Prepare geological/geotechnical reports for DPRs, PFRs, and statutory submissions (CEA, CWC).
• Liaise with GSI, National Institute of Rock Mechanics, and consultants for validation.
• Support design teams with foundation treatment and underground excavation input.
• Assist in land/forest clearance processes with geological input for environmental clearances.
• Coordinate with drilling contractors and testing labs; review lab results.

Job Title: Geologist – Pumped Storage Projects

Reports To: Head – PSP Projects / Chief Engineer/Business Head

Location: Corporate Office / Site-based, as required

Job Purpose

To lead geological and geotechnical investigations for identification, evaluation, and development of Pumped Storage Project sites, ensuring the terrain, rock mass, and reservoir conditions support safe, feasible, and bankable project design.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct desktop studies (toposheets, satellite imagery, DEM analysis) to shortlist potential upper/lower reservoir sites for PSP.
• Carry out field geological mapping, reconnaissance surveys, and site reconnaissance for dam/dyke, waterway, powerhouse, and reservoir locations.
• Plan and supervise geotechnical investigations — boreholes, drifts/adits, trenches, geophysical surveys (seismic refraction, resistivity), rock mass classification (RMR/Q-system).
• Assess reservoir seepage potential, slope stability, landslide susceptibility, and seismic/tectonic setting of the region.
• Prepare geological/geotechnical reports for Detailed Project Reports (DPR), Pre-Feasibility Reports (PFR), and statutory submissions (CEA, CWC, State Nodal Agencies).
• Liaise with Geological Survey of India (GSI), National Institute of Rock Mechanics, and specialized consultants for third‑party validation.
• Support design teams with input on foundation treatment, grouting requirements, and underground excavation (tunnels, penstocks, powerhouse caverns).
• Assist in land and forest clearance processes by providing geological input for environmental and statutory clearances.
• Coordinate with drilling contractors and testing laboratories; review geotechnical lab results (rock/soil strength, permeability).

Qualifications

• M.Sc./M.Tech in Geology, Applied Geology, or Engineering Geology (B.Sc./B.Tech considered with strong relevant experience).

Experience

• 6–10 years in geological/geotechnical investigations for hydropower, PSP, dams, tunnels, or large infrastructure projects.
• Prior exposure to PSP or hydroelectric project DPR preparation strongly preferred.
