Job summary

Sarthee Consultancy invites applications for a rolling mill engineer role. You will monitor and control operational parameters for mill stands, ensure proper roll and guide setup, supervise threading and product transfer, and uphold safety and TPM practices on the shop floor. Qualifications include Diploma/B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Production Engineering.

Experience: Jr. Engineer: 13 years in rolling mill operations (preferably WRM or bar/rod mill); Engineer: 3–6 years in mill

Qualifications

  • Diploma/B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Production Engineering.
  • Jr. Engineer: 13 years in rolling mill operations (preferably WRM or bar/rod mill).
  • Engineer: 3–6 years in mill operations up to finishing stands in an integrated steel plant (0.5 MTPA+)

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and control operational parameters for mill stands to achieve rolling speed and product quality targets.
  • Ensure proper roll and guide setup through coordination with roll shop and guide shop personnel.
  • Supervise threading, tailing out, and product transfer to prevent cobbles and process delays.
  • Maintain rolling sequence, pass design compliance, and adherence to standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with the control room to monitor rolling loads, speeds, and temperature profiles for effective process control.
  • Promptly identify and respond to process abnormalities or mechanical issues; implement troubleshooting measures.
  • Regularly inspect mill stands, drives, gearboxes, chocks, bearings, and hydraulic systems during shifts.
  • Coordinate with mechanical and electrical maintenance teams for preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Verify lubrication system, cooling water, and guide mechanism functionality for sustained equipment health.
  • Assist with mill stand changes, roll changes, and setup activities as per production plan requirements.
  • Record and report equipment performance, breakdowns, and corrective actions during each shift.
  • Deliver targeted production with minimal downtime and scrap or quality rejections.
  • Monitor rolling dimensions, maintain tolerances, and ensure surface quality meeting specified requirements.
  • Adjust rolling parameters based on quality control instructions or process deviations; support trials of new products or pass schedules.
  • Ensure strict compliance with safety rules, PPE usage, and conduct pre-start safety checks; maintain safe tool and equipment handling practices.
  • Maintain high housekeeping standards and support 5S and TPM implementation in the mill area.
  • Report unsafe acts or conditions and assist in safety audits and training programs.
  • Coordinate closely with roll/guide shop, workshop, control room, reheating furnace, and finishing teams for uninterrupted operation and resource availability.
  • Maintain detailed shift reports on mill performance, downtime, and production; participate in root cause analysis for failures or process deviations.
