Job summary

American Bureau of Shipping in Mumbai seeks a senior engineering leader to guide a team, conduct design reviews, and ensure compliance with ABS Rules, SOLAS, and MARPOL. You will plan and supervise engineering tasks across multiple projects.

The role requires a B.S. in Mechanical or Marine Engineering with 10–15 years of related experience; an M.S. is preferred. Strong communication and piping systems experience are important for success in this position.

  • Review piping diagrams, hydraulic calculations, mechanical components and onboard manuals.
  • Draft accurate reports and client communications for review by senior staff.
  • Prepare weekly reports and billing for work performed.
  • Communicate workload status to team to meet client needs.

Job description

In accordance with established policies, procedures and standards, is responsible for the activities related to an assigned organizational element, program, project or task. Will normally plan, conduct and supervise engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature requiring ingenuity and cross functional coordination. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, and will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods, and procedures.

What You Will Do
  • Provides day-to-day leadership of Engineering staff assigned. Assigns projects to Engineers and monitors the progress of all assigned projects. Ensures the delivery of high quality service and maintenance of good customer relations.
  • Perform detailed engineering review of plans independently, as assigned, for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations, and contract commitments.
  • Review of the Piping diagrams, Piping Hydraulic calculations, Mechanical components and onboard manuals based on the ABS Rules, Statutory Regulations like SOLAS, IMO MODU Code, MARPOL, etc.
  • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practices but may include moderately complex problems such as resolving conflicting design requirements, material standards, or coordinating activities among other disciplines.
  • Draft technically accurate and timely reports and responses to client letters and other forms of communication for review by an experienced engineer or engineering manager.
  • Prepare accurate and timely weekly reports and billing on all work performed.
  • Communicate the status of the current workload to all appropriate team members to ensure the client's needs will be met.
  • Propose technical advice to field operations and other technical offices.
  • Propose new approaches to problems encountered and recommend changes in methods, procedures, or designs.
  • Monitors the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity and timeliness of action of all assigned projects.
  • Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of technical responsibility.
  • Performs engineering reviews and analyses when necessary. Reviews other engineers' work and provides appropriate guidance and training when necessary.
  • Participates in the development and changes of Rules. Advise assigned staff in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations.
  • Prepare written response to clients in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains liaison with other engineering specialists internally and externally.
  • Monitors the performance, development potential and training needs of engineers assigned. Keeps management informed of manpower needs.
  • Develops or assists in the development of qualification statements, proposals, bids and other presentation materials.
  • Implements and maintains the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Prepares accurate billing to clients.
  • May work directly with clients to identify and resolve problems in technical expertise.
  • Work as a team member within the group and autonomously with minimal supervision.
What You Will Need

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred.
  • Ten to fifteen (10–15) years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Should have advanced practical industry related experience.
  • Knowledge of the Marine Vessels and Offshore units and Related systems.
  • Knowledge of the Piping Systems, Pipe fittings, Machineries, Mechanical components, Materials and Manuals used onboard.
  • Knowledge of the latest Statutory updates or the latest technologies involved in the Marine and Offshore industry.
  • Knowledge of Class Rules, Regulations like SOLAS, FSS Code, MARPOL, IMO MODU Code, etc. and the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.
  • Knowledge of emission related documents and regulations (MEPC Regulations and Circulars, EU-MRV, UK MRV, etc.) mandatory optional.
  • Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.
  • The soft skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and motivation to subordinate staff and peers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and solve complex or unique engineering problems.
  • Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  • Able to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
  • Professional or chartered engineer license or master's degree would be an added advantage.

The incumbent will report to Managing Principal Engineer.

Working Conditions and Schedule

Work is primarily sedentary. Occasionally will be required to visit manufacturing plants, remote field sites or go aboard marine vessels or structures. Wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in accordance with ABS safety procedures, is required in such occasions.
