Role Summary
Fluence is seeking a highly capable Instrumentation & Control Engineer to support the design and development of advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This role requires strong experience in control systems design, instrumentation selection, industrial communication protocols, and safety‑related control architectures. The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience with control hardware, networking fundamentals, and system‑level integration across power and communication interfaces. You will collaborate closely with global engineering, product development, manufacturing, and field teams to deliver high‑quality, safe, and reliable energy storage solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- BESS Instrumentation & Control Engineering
- Support the development of control architecture and instrumentation strategy for utility‑scale and commercial BESS solutions.
- Work with systems, electrical, and firmware teams to design reliable and scalable control solutions.
- Control Schematic Design
- Develop and review electrical control schematics, wiring diagrams, I/O mapping documents, control panel layouts, and termination diagrams.
- Ensure designs comply with internal standards, safety requirements, and industry best practices.
- Component Selection & Sizing
- Select and size control and instrumentation components such as relays, safety relays, interlocks, I/O modules (AI/DI/AO/DO), sensors (temperature, pressure, voltage/current transducers, etc.), communication interface modules, control power devices, power supplies, and terminal blocks.
- Evaluate supplier specifications and support procurement and qualification activities.
- Cable Engineering
- Perform cable sizing and selection for control, signal, communication, and power circuits.
- Develop cable schedules, wiring plans, and cable harness layouts for enclosure‑level and system‑level assemblies.
- Communication & Networking
- Design control networks with understanding.
- Ensure robust and noise‑immune communication strategies in industrial environments.
- Industrial Protocols & Interfaces
- Integrate and troubleshoot communication protocols including Modbus RTU / Modbus TCP, RS232, RS485, Ethernet, CAN.
- Safety Systems
- Design and validate safety‑related control architectures including E‑Stop logic, safety relays, hardwired interlocks.
- Ensure system safety compliance with international standards and Fluence safety processes.
- BoM & Documentation
- Prepare accurate Instrumentation & Control Bill of Materials (BoM).
- Maintain up‑to‑date engineering documentation across design cycles and revisions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, Electronics, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in Instrumentation, Control Systems, or Electrical Engineering, preferably within BESS, renewable energy, or industrial automation.
- Hands‑on experience in preparing electrical control schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Strong understanding of control component sizing and selection.
- Knowledge of Modbus RTU/TCP and industrial serial/ethernet communication standards.
- Experience with safety relays, I/O modules, and E‑Stop logic.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent tools.
- Familiarity with cable engineering (sizing, routing, harnessing).
- Solid understanding of network fundamentals and communication hardware.
- Strong documentation, problem‑solving, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
Additional Qualifications
- Prior experience in energy storage systems, PCS integration, or industrial automation.
- Understanding of IEC/UL/NFPA control and safety standards.
- Experience supporting commissioning or field troubleshooting activities.
