Job summary

Fluence Energy in Bengaluru, India, is seeking a Battery Data Scientist to advance analytics for Battery Energy Storage Systems and renewable assets. You will build data-driven models, apply ML/AI and optimization, and create visualizations communicating results to stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 3 to 7+ years of experience in data science, data/software engineering, controls, operations research, or related roles in energy/industrial automation.
• Proven experience applying statistics, ML/AI, and optimization to real-world datasets.
• Strong Python programming with scientific libraries (NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, etc.).
• Experience building scalable, production-grade analytics solutions with software teams.
• Solid understanding of energy storage/renewables and related technologies.

Job Description

This position is part of Fluence’s Battery Systems and Analytics team and will play a key role in advancing battery analytics and enhancing our product offering. The platform monitors, analyzes, and optimizes the performance of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and renewable energy assets. The role will be based in Fluence’s excellence center in Bangalore, India, and will report to the Director of Battery Systems Engineering in the USA.

As a Battery Data Scientist, you will contribute to data science projects aimed at improving BESS performance through advanced monitoring, analytics, and control. Leveraging your experience in statistics, mathematical optimization, Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and battery systems, you will develop data-driven models and analytics solutions that extract actionable insights from large datasets, delivering value to our customers. Additionally, you will create

visualizations and reports that communicate model results and key insights, providing a clear and comprehensive overview of the assets. You will collaborate with product managers, other data scientists, and subject matter experts to align on technical requirements and work with software engineers to integrate the developed models into Fluence’s platforms.

Key responsibilities include

• Develop advanced analytics, KPIs, and alerts using operational data from batteries to assess performance, degradation, efficiency, and detect emerging issues.
• Build, train, and maintain first-principles, ML / AI, and optimization models for battery performance assessment and control applications such as forecasting, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance.
• Create insightful visualizations and reports that effectively communicate model results, performance metrics, and key findings to internal and external stakeholders.
• Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to understand product requirements, develop robust data analytics and control models

Must have

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Data Science, Computer Science, Electrical / Mechanical / Chemical Engineering, Mathematics) with 3 to 7+ years of professional experience.
• Professional experience in data science, data / software engineering, controls, operations research, or related roles in the energy sector (e.g., battery storage, renewable energy, power systems) or industrial automation.
• Programming skills in Python or comparable programming language, with strong experience in scientific libraries (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Pyomo, and Plotly).
• Proven experience developing scalable, maintainable, production-grade analytics solutions in collaboration with software engineering teams.
• Proficiency in statistical analysis, ML / AI models, and/or mathematical optimization.
• Solid understanding of the energy sector, with at least some familiarity with battery storage and renewable energy technologies.
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with a passion for learning and tackling new technical challenges.
• Strong organization skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate and build effective working relationships.
• Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, manage tasks with minimal supervision, meet deadlines, and deliver solutions quickly and at high quality.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Strong background in power systems, renewable energy, and energy storage.
• Prior professional experience and/or education in lithium-ion battery modeling and analytics, including understanding of cell chemistry, equivalent circuit models, performance metrics, and degradation factors.
• Experience with additional programming languages.
• Proven experience with cloud technologies, preferably AWS.
• Proficient in collaboration and project management tools (e.g., Jira, GitHub).
• Hands-on experience with agile development frameworks, ideally Scrum.
