Job summary

LT-Larsen & Toubro in Chennai seeks a Design Lead (Primary) to review and execute primary engineering activities for AIS/GIS substation projects across multiple domains. You will coordinate with inter-departmental checks and guide a team of design engineers and drafters to deliver high-quality drawings and documents.

The role requires extensive knowledge of substation layouts, primary engineering, and related software tools (BIM, Digsilent, PSCAD, CYMGRD).

Qualifications

• BE/B.Tech in Electrical or Electrical & Electronics Engineering is required.
• 10+ years of experience in Primary Design Engineering activities.

Responsibilities

• Review and execute primary engineering activities for AIS/GIS substation projects across multiple domains.
• Lead a team of design engineers and drafters to deliver drawings and documents on time and within budget.
• Coordinate with inter-departmental checks (Electrical, Civil/Structural, MEP) and with external contractors for construction and approvals.
• Provide support through full project lifecycle from pre-bid engineering to commissioning and warranty period.
• Ensure compliance to project schedule and quality standards.

Job description

As Design Lead (Primary), the person shall be capable of reviewing & executing Primary Engineering Activities for AIS / GIS Substation Projects covering multiple geographical domains. He must have good knowledge in Layout Engineering in Substation Projects. He shall facilitate the modellers in development of BIM 3D Model for Substations. In addition, she / he must coordinate with other departments including Inter-departmental checks covering, Electrical, Civil/ Structural, MEP and others. The Design Lead (Primary) shall be required to provide support for the engineering activities covering the full cycle of works from pre-bid engineering to support during commissioning and warranty periods and to extend support to site team.

She / He shall lead a team of Design Engineers and Draughtspersons to manage the Engineering activities within budget, deliver on time and maintaining a high quality of engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Timely Delivery of Engineering Drawings & Documents
• Review of Engineering document prepared at Remote Engineering office (India) & assigning the same to Local Adaptation consultant for Language Translation & compliance to local Standard.
• Co-ordinating with local contractor for construction work and supporting them for solving construction issue.
• Co-odinating with ACWA and NEGU team for getting drawing approval for construction activities.
• Timely Delivery of Engineering Drawings & Documents.
• Ensure deliveries are aligned to Project Schedule.
• Seek and obtain spatial requirements and details of cut-outs and openings from the Design Lead (Secondary) and incorporate into relevant Drawings
• Review primary drawings by Design Engineers & Draughtspersons & checking of design & sizing calculations of primary engineering electrical equipment and obtaining approvals from the client
• Review of Vendor deliverables pertaining to Primary Engineering
• Capable of Multitasking and deliver multiple things on time
• Coordinate with multiple disciplines for ensuring inter-departmental checks
• Provide support & clarifications to the Site Execution team
• Check pre-award evaluation of vendors (w.r.t. technical specifications requirement of the client) and forward the validation document to Supply Chain Management
• Inspect equipment from the finalized vendor after submission of validation document of the vendor.
• Clarify issues w.r.t. the design & requirements of the client to the Site Execution Team
• Collect inputs for project details (plot details, feeder arrangements etc.) from client & Project Engineering Manager
• Coordinating with Operations team and informing Design specifications for obtaining approval
• Collect inputs for project details (General Arrangement Drawings) from Vendors
• Check deliverables prepared by Engineering office and suitability for construction such as Equipment layouts, Cable Routing Layout, Cable Tray Layout, Earthing Layout, lighting Layout, Lightning Protection Layout
• Provide support to secondary team for reviewing Vendor drawings
• Submit requirement of man-hours for undertaking & reviewing of design & drawings of the project

Software Skills Required

• Desirable awareness of BIM, Digsilent, PSCAD & CYMGRD

Technical Expertise

• The Design Lead (Primary) is required to have an overall knowledge of equipment layouts and necessary calculations.
• The Design Lead (Primary) should also have detailed knowledge of Substation equipment and their Layouts. Furthermore, she / he should have the understanding of primary engineering activities covering SLD Preparation, Layout Engineering, Earthing, Cable Routing, Lighting, Lightning Protection, Cable Tray Routing etc. He should be capable of performing design & sizing calculations of Busbar, UPS, DG, LT Transformer, Earthing Conductor, calculations (Short circuit force, Sag tension, CCC etc.). The Design Lead (Primary) is required to have knowledge on National and International Codes and Standards.
• The Design Lead (Primary) is required to understand and interpret the contractual technical requirements and facilitate the Project Teams as and when required.
• In addition, the Design Lead (Primary) should also have an overall understanding of the inter-disciplinary (Civil & Structural, Mechanical and Instrumentation) design aspects of electrical equipment.
