Overview

Our Design Engineer – Estimation will be responsible for preparing timely and accurate cost estimations that drive our business acquisition efforts. The role demands technical acumen in casting and machining processes, strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with application engineers and marketing, and the ability to conduct and lead Technical Feasibility Studies (TFS) to support decision-making. The candidate must also bring a futuristic outlook on leveraging AI and advanced simulation tools (CAD/CFD/CAM) to improve accuracy and speed of estimations.

Job Details

Job Title: Design Engineer – Estimation

Department: Design & Engineering (D&E)

Experience: 0–2 years (competent fresher) OR ideally 4–6 years in estimation/costing within manufacturing, foundry, or machining environment.

Qualification: B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (M.Tech preferred)

Key Accountabilities

Estimation & Costing

  • Prepare cost estimates for castings, machining, tooling, and gauges based on customer drawings and specifications.
  • Develop preliminary BOM (Bill of Materials) and process flow diagrams to support quotation accuracy.
  • Work with application engineers and marketing to ensure estimates meet customer requirements and timelines.

TFS (Technical Feasibility Study)

  • Conduct Technical Feasibility Studies (TFS) as part of the estimation process.
  • Lead and facilitate TFS meetings with cross-functional teams (engineering, SCM, quality, operations).
  • Document findings and integrate them into the estimation package for customer quotations.

Collaboration & Customer Orientation

  • Partner closely with application engineers, SCM, and finance teams to finalize quotations.
  • Support marketing with technical clarifications during pre-sales and customer interactions.
  • Ensure estimation aligns with profitability targets and company costing benchmarks.

Process Knowledge & Continuous Improvement

  • Apply knowledge of casting, machining, and special processes to optimize cost competitiveness.
  • Continuously refine estimation tools, templates, and databases for faster turnaround.
  • Benchmark costs against industry standards to improve accuracy.

Futuristic Outlook

  • Embrace and explore AI-driven tools, CAD/CFD/CAM simulations, and digital estimation platforms.
  • Use advanced simulations for cycle time, yield, and tooling impact to improve estimation reliability.
  • Contribute ideas for adopting emerging technologies to keep VSPL at the forefront of accurate, timely estimation.
Responsibilities
  • Review customer drawings and specifications to identify manufacturing feasibility.
  • Estimate cycle times, material utilization, tooling requirements, and process costs.
  • Release accurate budget quotes within agreed timelines to support marketing efforts.
  • Conduct and lead TFS meetings, capturing cross-functional inputs into the estimation.
  • Document assumptions, risks, and cost drivers in estimation reports.
  • Engage with cross-functional teams to validate estimates against actuals and drive learning.
What You Bring to the Table
  • Strong foundation in mechanical/manufacturing engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with casting and machining processes (foundry background is an advantage).
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (Creo, NX, SolidWorks) with awareness of CFD/FEA/CAM applications.
