Job summary

Barclays is seeking a Data Scientist (Banking) at AVP level in Gurgaon to lead development of statistical and machine learning models for credit risk, fraud detection, and customer segmentation. You will design data strategies, analyze complex datasets, and drive AI capabilities across the organization.

You will work with SQL, Python and Spark, exploring data, building dashboards, and ensuring robust model governance and controls in a fast-paced banking environment.

Qualifications

• Experience using analytical tools for data exploration, analysis and visualization.
• Coding ability with SQL, Scala/Spark/Python.
• Familiarity with data management and model validation.
• Knowledge of ML, LLM and GenAI.

Responsibilities

• Acquire and integrate data from multiple sources including internal databases, external datasets and real-time feeds.
• Clean and preprocess data to ensure data quality for model development.
• Design data management strategies for model maintenance and future development.
• Develop statistical and ML models for credit risk, fraud detection, customer segmentation and marketing optimization.
• Monitor model performance in real time and address biases or issues.
• Lead training, mentoring and knowledge-sharing to uplift ML capabilities.
• Evaluate emerging technologies, tools and frameworks to stay at AI forefront.

To be successful as a Data Scientist (Banking) - AVP, you should have experience with

• Ability to solve problems logically and/or creatively, demonstrating professional judgment, quality control and adherence to high standards.
• Experience in utilizing analytical tools for data exploration, analysis and visualization, including certain coding ability and experience on SQL, Scala / Spark / Python.
• Databases, structured and unstructured data.
• Some experience in development of data visualizations/dashboards.
• Understanding of Data Management & Model Validation principles and controls.
• Relevant qualifications in data analytics and technical field, with strong organizational skills.
• Understanding with Machine Learning, LLM and preferably GenAI.

Some Good To Have Skills

• An appreciation of Financial Crime, AML and Transaction Monitoring/detection and the systems/processes, including an understanding of AML and terrorist financing trends and typologies.
• Knowledge of the UK and Global Financial Crime regulatory framework.

This role is based out of DLF Downtown, Gurgaon.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop, implement, and maintain various statistical, mathematical and machine learning models to support decision‑making by analysis and solving complex problems.

Accountabilities

• Acquisition and collection of data from various sources, including internal databases, external datasets, and real‑time feeds.
• Performing data cleaning and pre‑processing tasks to ensure data quality and suitability for model development.
• Design and implementation of data management strategies for model maintenance and future development.
• Designing, development, and implementation of statistical and machine learning models for various applications, including credit risk assessment, fraud detection, customer segmentation, and marketing optimisation.
• Monitoring model performance in real‑time and identify any potential issues or biases.
• Leading training, mentoring, and knowledge‑sharing sessions to uplift ML capability across the organisation.
• Evaluating and piloting emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks to ensure the organisation remains at the forefront of AI innovation.
