Qualifications

Job Description: CNC Router Machine Designer cum Operator (Stone & Wood)

About the Role

We are looking for a skilled and creative CNC Router Designer cum Operator to handle both the design and production side of our CNC work on stone and wood. The ideal candidate can take a concept, sketch, or client reference, convert it into a production-ready 2D/3D design, generate accurate toolpaths, and run the machine to deliver a high-quality finished product. This role suits someone who enjoys the artistic side of carving as much as the technical side of machining.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Programming

• Create 2D and 3D designs for carving, engraving, relief work, jali/lattice patterns, inlay, lettering, and decorative panels on stone and wood.
• Convert client drawings, photos, sketches, and reference images into CNC-ready vector and relief files.
• Generate optimized toolpaths (roughing, finishing, profiling, V-carving, pocketing, drilling) using CAM software.
• Select appropriate tools, feeds, speeds, depth of cut, and step-over based on material type, hardness, and design detail.
• Maintain an organized library of designs, templates, and tool settings for repeat orders.
• Estimate machining time and material requirements for quotations and production planning.

Machine Operation

• Set up and operate CNC router machines for stone (marble, granite, sandstone, etc.) and wood (solid wood, MDF, plywood, etc.).
• Load programs, set work zero/origin, mount tools, and secure material using clamps or vacuum tables.
• Monitor machining operations, make on-the-spot adjustments, and ensure accuracy and finish quality.
• Manage water cooling and slurry handling for stone work, and dust extraction for wood work.
• Inspect finished pieces against design specifications and rework where necessary.

Maintenance & Safety

• Carry out routine machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, spindle care, and checking guide rails, belts, and ball screws.
• Monitor tool wear and maintain tool inventory (router bits, diamond tools, engraving cutters).
• Report and help troubleshoot machine faults, controller errors, and electrical or mechanical issues.
• Follow workshop safety practices and use PPE at all times.

Coordination

• Work with the sales and production team to understand customer requirements and customization requests.
• Suggest design improvements for better aesthetics, machining efficiency, and reduced material wastage.
• Guide and train helpers or junior operators when required.

Required Skills

• Hands-on proficiency in one or more CAD/CAM software such as ArtCAM, Vectric Aspire / VCarve, Type3, JDPaint, EnRoute, AutoCAD, CorelDRAW, Rhino, or Fusion 360.
• Strong ability to create 3D relief models and decorative/ornamental designs.
• Working knowledge of CNC controllers such as DSP (Richauto), NcStudio, Mach3, Syntec, or similar.
• Good understanding of G-code basics, tool selection, and cutting parameters for both stone and wood.
• Knowledge of material behaviour, grain direction in wood, and hardness/brittleness of different stones.
• Ability to read technical drawings and take accurate measurements.
• Eye for detail, finishing quality, and artistic proportion.

Qualifications & Experience

• ITI / Diploma in Mechanical, Tool & Die, CNC Programming, or a related field. Candidates with equivalent practical experience are also welcome.
• 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience as a CNC router designer and/or operator, preferably in stone carving, woodworking, furniture, interior dcor, or signage industries.
• A portfolio of past design work (photos of finished pieces or design files) is strongly preferred.

Preferred (Good to Have)

• Experience with multi-axis or rotary-axis (3rd axis) CNC routers for pillars, balusters, or 3D sculptures.
• Experience with laser machines or other CNC equipment.
• Basic knowledge of electrical troubleshooting for CNC machines.
• Experience handling temple, monument, architectural, or luxury interior projects.
