Job summary

Behr Paint Company is seeking a Chemist I in its Research and Development team in Pune to perform and document regular laboratory tests, assist in new product development, and conduct entry-level testing of experimental samples. You will maintain product specs and contribute to benchmarking analyses to guide product improvements.

The role requires MSc in Chemistry or related field, with considerable experience in chemical analysis and industrial research; coating industry experience is a plus.

JOB TITLE: Chemist I

DEPARTMENT: Research and Development

SUPERVISOR’S JOB TITLE: Group Leader, Section Manager

JOB SCOPE/ SUMMARY:

• Perform and document results of regularly scheduled laboratory tests

• Assist in new product development and improvements of existing products

• Perform entry-level testing and comparison of experimental samples

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Prepare samples using laboratory dispersion and blending equipment. Participate in product and test decision-making relating to general product development. Maintain and update product specifications and performance properties for research purposes. Conduct competitive product benchmarking analyses to test gloss, viscosity, contrast ratio, flow and leveling, and make recommendations for product improvement. Define test parameters and initiate product exposure studies. Direct raw material evaluation tests to conclusion and peer review. Focus on new product development and participate in ideation and innovation. Conduct quality control checks and troubleshoot problems as needed. Train and monitor the work of research and development technicians and temporary personnel in carrying out their daily duties. Prepare management reports and charts to substantiate facts and findings. Interpret and respond to requests for data and information, either orally or in writing, and answer related questions.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/TRAINING:

• Educational attainment equivalent to a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Chemistry, Batchlors Degree in Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• Considerable experience in chemical analysis and industrial research applications is required.
• Experience in Architectural coatings / Aerosol Coating is desirable but not essential.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES RECOMMENDED FOR POSITION:

Considerable knowledge of raw materials, proper equipment used in testing practices, advanced mathematics, chemical formulation, and chemical composition as applied to research studies in laboratory settings. Comprehensive knowledge of quality control (QC) standards, laboratory safety practices, production operations, processing methods, manufacturing practices, line procedures, product features, and competitive advantages. Proficiency in computer hardware and software systems and applications. Ability to plan, organize, and complete work as scheduled. Ability to work independently, as well as train and supervise the work of technical personnel. Ability to maintain laboratory research and testing records and prepare periodic reports. Ability to exercise initiative in designing and implementing independent chemical research. Ability to communicate effectively, read specifications, and follow precise oral or written instructions. Ability to operate all laboratory processing equipment used to manufacture and test products, including glossmeters, solids testing equipment and viscosity testing equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Exhibit proficiency in all areas of the Research and Development Technician classification
