Brand Manager

(Title is negotiable, we will fit it to the person instead of the other way around)

If you are the pink sheep in a world of black and whites, this one is yours.

That is not a line on a wall here, it is how the work gets made. We would rather be argued with than agreed with, and we would rather be remembered than be safe.

About Us

Our client is a new venture by a leading Indian consumer brand builder. We are in the business of building tasteful brands across categories and geographies. That could mean 0 to 1, 1 to 10, or 10 to 1000. Six months in, we are about 25 people, each one here to do the best work of our lives.

The founder did not build a leading consumer brand by making good products. He built it by understanding what a generation of Indians wanted to feel about themselves, and then making that buyable. We are doing that again, across more categories, for more kinds of Indians, from scratch.

WHY WE ARE HIRING

We need someone to run one of our brands. The brand is deeply rooted in South India. Its culture, its rituals, its everyday habits. The category it walks into has spent decades selling the past. Heritage, nostalgia, sepia, hand-pounded, home-style, authentic since 19-whatever. Almost none of its language speaks to how people actually live and shop right now.

We are building a culture-first brand. A regional representation of taste, in the present tense, with a point of view. Rooted enough to carry real authority, current enough to sit in a 24-year-old’s cart without explaining itself.

There will be a creative lead on this brand who owns what it looks like and sounds like. You own how to make the brand work. The plan, the portfolio, the money, the partners, the calendar, the shelf.

We are looking for someone who already understands this market or can build a plan around it and execute end-to-end. More on the category and the brand once we are talking properly.

What You Will Own
  • The brand plan. What we launch, when, for whom, with what money. Annual on paper, quarterly in practice, and rewritten the moment the market says something different.
  • The consumer. Who buys, who almost buys, and what makes someone switch after twenty years of buying the same thing. Some of that comes from data. Most of it comes from reginal learning.
  • The portfolio. Pack sizes, price points, the SKU ladder, what launches and what gets killed. You bring the market back to product and supply chain as a point of view, not as a list of requests.
  • Go to market. Launch sequence, city by city and channel by channel. Where we start, where we deliberately do not, and what has to be true before we widen.
  • Channels. Quick commerce, marketplaces, modern trade, general trade, D2C. Listings, content, ratings, share of search, the merchandising calendar. A lot of this is unglamorous and it still decides the year.
  • Media and budget. Where the money goes, what came back, what gets cut. You will defend a spend line, and you will also be the one to kill your own.
  • The numbers. Awareness, trial, repeat, velocity per store, ROAS, share of search. You own the dashboard and you report it honestly, including the months it looks bad.
  • Briefs. Written so a creative team can act on them. One problem, one real constraint, one thing to say. Then you get out of the way and let them make it better than the brief.
  • Activations, brand partnerships, regional calendars. In this category, tasting beats telling, and you plan for that from day one.
  • The cross-functional mess. Founders, supply chain, sales, growth, product. A launch slips because packaging is stuck at a printer, and you are the person who knows that before anyone tells you.
Cultural Fluency, What We Actually Mean
  • You truly believe the representation of South India by brands so far has been extremely surface level, and you can name the specific work that proves your point.
  • You understand that the southern states are four different markets, not one segment. Different retail, different price expectations, different reasons to pick something up.
  • You know which festivals move sales and which only move greetings.
  • You are fluent in at least one South Indian language. Fluent enough to stand in a shop, ask a real question and follow the answer the shopkeeper gives the customer next to you.
  • You can read a line of regional copy and tell whether it sounds like a person or like it went through Google Translate. And you push back when it is the latter.
THIS IS FOR YOU IF

A tidy deck and a media plan do not tell us much. We want someone with a point of view about this market and the numbers to argue it with. And is a go getter who runs the brand.

Must have
  • Three or more years in brand or marketing, with real ownership. A brand, a category or a launch that was actually yours.
  • South Indian cultural fluency, exactly as described above.
  • Comfort with numbers. You can build a plan, defend it line by line, and spot the month where it quietly stops making sense.
  • Judgment on spend. Deciding what not to fund is the harder half of the job.
  • You can write a brief a creative person actually wants to work on.
  • Execution across levels. A pricing conversation at 11am, fixing a listing title or chasing a vendor at 8pm.
  • Comfort with ambiguity. No playbook, and no category norms we intend to inherit.
  • You can think without AI. Use the tools to move faster, never to think for you.
Strongly preferred
  • Food or FMCG background. You know packaging is the biggest media buy, that sampling converts, and roughly what FSSAI will and will not let you print on a pack.
  • A 0 to 1 launch. You have taken something from nothing to on-shelf, and you remember what broke.
  • Quick commerce and marketplace depth. Listings, ads, assortment, share of search.
  • Time inside a large FMCG system and time inside a startup. One taught you rigour, the other taught you speed.
  • Real experience in southern markets. Distributors, trade, regional media, local creators.
  • Experience managing agencies, vendors and a small team.
And the quirks
  • You know the difference between a brand that is famous and a brand that is bought, and you can name one of each.
  • You read the back of packs in other people’s trolleys.
  • There is a regional brand you admire that never ran a national campaign, and you know exactly why it worked.
  • You hold strong opinions about a shelf you had nothing to do with.
WHY JOIN

Full ownership of a brand at a house of brands, from day zero. Direct access to one of the sharpest consumer brand builders in India. And the chance to build something rooted in a culture that most national brands still market to badly.
