Job summary

Keywords Studios, through Helpshift, seeks a Backend Software Engineer I to join our server-side team. You will work on medium to large-scale systems, implement features, and ensure code quality with tests. You’ll collaborate across teams to deliver scalable solutions for a global user base.

We value strong CS fundamentals, knowledge of Java/Python/Node, and experience with Git. The role emphasizes ownership, teamwork, and continuous learning in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
• 1–3 years of medium to large scale server-side software development experience.
• Strong understanding of CS fundamentals: data structures and algorithms, databases.
• Proficiency in a backend language (Java, Python, Node, or Clojure).
• Experience with AI coding assistants for code generation and refactoring.
• Knowledge of POSIX-compliant OS (Mac OS X / GNU/Linux).
• Experience writing Unit, Functional & Regression tests.
• Experience with Git and distributed version control.
• Strong verbal and written communication; team player with ownership.

Responsibilities

• Develop product features for 820M monthly active users.
• Take ownership of features and ensure quality.
• Write clean code with test coverage.
• Review others’ code to meet company standards.
• Design scalable features for high request rates (100K+ RPS).

Backend SE 1

About you - must have

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science (or equivalent).
• 1–3 years of medium to large scale server-side software development experience.
• Good knowledge of CS fundamentals: Data structures, the time complexity of algorithms, databases.
• Good knowledge of a backend programming language like Java, Python, Node or Clojure
• Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants (e.g., Cursor) for code generation, fast context lookup, and refactoring.
• Knowledge of Posix compliant Operating Systems (we develop on Mac OS X and deploy on GNU/Linux).
• Experience in writing Unit, Functional & Regression tests.
• Experience in working with a distributed version control tool (We use Git)
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Display strong work ethics. Be a team player with a strong sense of ownership and collaboration.

Nice to Have

• Knowledge of functional programming is a plus (We use Clojure)
• Experience in working with any one of Yugabytedb, MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, Kafka, or Postgresql at scale is good to have.
• Experience with benchmarking systems for performance, failure detection is good to have.

About the role

• Work with the rest of the team in developing product features that get delivered to 820M monthly active users.
• Take ownership of the product feature and be responsible for it's quality.
• Write clean code with proper test coverage.
• Review other people's code and ensure that it is up to company standards.
• Design and develop features that can scale to 100K+ RPS
