Operations IT is a global IT capability supporting the Global Operations organisation. We business partner with Operations capability areas: Pharmaceutical Technology Development, Manufacturing & Global Engineering, Quality Control, Sustainability, Supply Chain, Logistics and Global External Sourcing and Procurement. THIS IS WHAT YOU’LL DO
- The Principal Architect has overall accountability for the consistent implementation of architecture decisions across business and IT to support the AZ business and IS strategy ensuring architectures are compliant with relevant AZ standards, blueprints and roadmaps.
- The role will be responsible for partnering with key business and IT Leadership teams, integrating information from business strategies and portfolios to develop the overall strategic direction, integration and quality for AstraZeneca’s architecture portfolio (AZ’s architecture assets: Business, Application, Information and Infrastructure).
- The Principal Enterprise Architect will also be accountable for the overall health and effectiveness of key architecture processes such as standards management and lifecycle management.
- Drive change in EA and proactively address industry trends in the definition of AZ’s imperatives and guidelines and educate EA stakeholders.
- Act as a sponsor or steering group member of projects with a cross-functional or enterprise wide scope.
- Provide Enterprise Architecture design thinking and support to Operations IT, with a focus on business and application architecture.
- Define the architecture strategy, direction and standards pertinent for Operations IT, working closely with the Domain-aligned Enterprise Architecture Leads.
- Ensure the architecture strategy aligns to the overall IT strategy and that this is clearly communicated and understood by senior OpsIT leaders.
- Analyse business priorities & strategies and translate these into architecture requirements for the Operations enterprise.
- Act as an authority to the architecture community and the business regarding strategic architecture decisions.
- Refine architecture strategies, direction and standards as required.
- Accountable for driving, leading and overseeing the development of Architecture Roadmaps and Blueprints (1-5 year horizon), working with the OpsIt EA Domain Leads.
- Ensure continuous alignment of capabilities with current business priorities and objectives.
- Be a contributing, proactive member of cross-functional decision making bodies and architecture governance forums.
- Acts as a sign off authority for domain architectures as well as architecture blueprints and roadmaps.
- Champion EA initiatives across IT and be a strongly proactive member of the extended EA community.
- Engage and build network with external architecture subject matter experts to remain up to date with latest trends and technologies.
- Proactively identify opportunities through internal and external networks, for IT to deliver innovative solutions to provide new or improved business capabilities, working closely with EA Domain leads, Capability leads and BRMs.
- Act as strategic architectural advisor for senior IT and Business management.
- Ensure Operations Architectures are in alignment with global strategies and solutions.
- Lead the development and implementation of Enterprise Architecture (EA) standards, processes and tools.
- Clear holistic strategies and agreed AZ approaches for management of key information.
- Analyse IT industry and market trends and determine potential impact upon enterprise.
- Establish partnerships with key technology suppliers.
- Provide thought leadership and advanced technical expertise for enterprise architecture across IT.
- Drive the continuous development of the Architecture Capability within OpsIT and wider EA, by championing and encouraging best practice sharing.
YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE
Essential
- Educated to degree level standard or equivalent (business technology or related degree).
- Experience of architecture strategy work, including business capability mapping, as is and to be application landscape documentation and analysis, and roadmap creation.
- Experience defining and aligning architectural roadmaps and strategies to business strategy.
- Qualification(s) in, and experience of pragmatic adoption of, Enterprise Architecture frameworks – TOGAF, Zachman.
- Expertise in architecture options analysis, and ability to problem solve issues of a highly complex and strategic nature.
- Experience with rationalisation, consolidation and integration across business domains using a formal framework.
- Experience of strategic justification phase work – product evaluation, business case formulation.
- Experience influencing key senior stakeholders in business and IT to adopt change or innovative solutions.
- Experience defining and developing components of an Enterprise Architecture practice.
- Experience of managing and negotiating with third party suppliers.
- Strong networking and influencing skills with good internal/external links.
- Expert relationship building skills with the ability to influence others to achieve objectives and positive outcomes.
- Excellent communication, facilitation and relationship building skills at senior levels of business and IT.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presenting to senior stakeholders.
- Ability to interpret and communicate technical information into business language.

- Externally recognized as a demonstrated leader in an area of the EA practice.
- Experience of establishing an Enterprise Architecture capability.
- Experience of architecture leadership within the pharmaceutical industry.
- Experience of Architecture tooling.
- Demonstrate initiative, strong customer orientation, and cross-cultural working.
- Masters and/or Professional Certification.
- Proven ability to partner and work in a matrix organisation.
