Job summary

Air India seeks an Associate Manager - Engineering Safety to support the Safety Management System within the Engineering & Maintenance division. The position requires experience in DGCA regulations, safety reporting, risk assessment, and audits, with a strong emphasis on root cause analysis and corrective actions

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a recognised university/institute, preferably in Aeronautical, Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Avionics Engineering; OR Aircraft Maintenance Engineering qualification with AME Licence in B1 or B2 category.

Responsibilities

• Conduct initial review and risk assessment of technical event reports and safety reports to determine severity and urgency.
• Conduct investigations into engineering safety occurrences and incidents as assigned.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams for fact-finding and evidence collection during investigations.
• Prepare preliminary and detailed investigation reports with findings and safety recommendations.
• Plan and conduct safety surveillance of Engineering & Maintenance activities to verify compliance with procedures and safety standards.
• Carry out inspections of engineering stores, maintenance locations and support functions.
• Identify unsafe practices and deviations during surveillance and audits and record findings with evidence.

Job Purpose

The Associate Manager - Engineering Safety (Investigation / Surveillance) is responsible for supporting the Safety Management System within the Engineering & Maintece division of Air India. The role focuses on conducting safety investigations, monitoring engineering functions through surveillance activities, identifying hazards, ensuring regulatory compliance and driving continuous improvement in safety performance.

The position plays a critical role in fostering a proactive safety culture by analysing trends, implementing corrective actions and ensuring adherence to regulatory and internal Air India safety standards.

Key Accountabilities

Safety Investigation

• Conduct initial review and risk assessment of all technical event reports, engineering incidents, occurrences and safety reports received through various reporting channels to determine their severity, urgency, operational impact and potential effect on safety.
• Conduct independent or joint investigations into engineering safety occurrences, incidents and technical events as assigned or directed by the Safety Manager.
• Coordinate with cross-functional teams for fact-finding, evidence collection and validation of information during investigations.
• Prepare preliminary investigation reports based on collected evidence, initial assessments and verified information to support further investigation and decision-making.
• Perform root cause analysis using recognised investigation methodologies to identify immediate causes, contributing factors & systemic issues and recommend suitable corrective and preventive actions if required.
• Prepare and submit detailed investigation reports in a timely manner, including clear findings, conclusions, risk assessments, corrective/preventive actions and safety recommendations.

Safety Surveillance and Audits

• Plan and conduct safety surveillance of Engineering & Maintece activities to verify compliance with approved procedures, regulatory requirements and company safety standards.
• Carry out routine and risk-based inspections of Air India activity centres, maintece locations, engineering stores / warehouse and engineering support functions.
• Identify unsafe practices, procedural deviations, human factor issue and weak safety controls during surveillance and audits.
• Record surveillance observations and audit findings with clear evidence, risk classification and recommended corrective actions.
• Prepare surveillance and audit reports highlighting observations, non-compliances, risk assessments and safety recommendations (if required).
• Coordinate with concerned departments for corrective action plans and ensure timely closure of surveillance observations and audit findings.
• Conduct follow-up checks to verify effectiveness of implemented corrective and preventive actions.
• Monitor repeated findings and trends from surveillance and audit reports to identify systemic safety issues.
• Monitor identified hazards through the Safety Risk Register and ensure associated risks, controls, mitigation actions and review status are updated regularly.
• Support internal audits, regulatory audits and safety reviews by providing required records, evidence and engineering safety inputs.
• Escalate significant safety concerns identified during surveillance or audits to the Safety Manager for timely review and action.
• Prepare safety reports, presentations, safety circulars.
• Facilitate effective safety communication and engagement, ensuring timely dissemination of critical safety information.
• Support the effective implementation and continual improvement of the Safety Management System by ensuring compliance with its four pillars and key elements.
• Maintains records pertaining to Engineering Safety.
• Execute any additional tasks or responsibilities assigned by the Safety Manager as required.

Educational Qualification

• Bachelor s degree or higher in Engineering from a recognised university/institute, preferably in Aeronautical, Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Avionics Engineering; OR
• Aircraft Maintece Engineering qualification with valid AME Licence in B1 or B2 category.

Experience

• Minimum 5 years of experience in the airline/aviation industry, with at least 2 years of relevant experience in a Safety Department in a similar role.
• Strong knowledge of DGCA regulations, CAR-145, CAR-M/CAMO requirements and ICAO SMS principles.
• Experience in hazard identification, risk assessment, safety reporting, investigation support, auditing and safety performance monitoring.
• Good understanding of occupational safety, human factors and safety promotion within engineering and maintece operations.
