Job Description
As an Associate at WSP you will lead and manage the Drainage Team and oversee a sizeable group of Drainage Engineers.
You will work closely with the UK business and the Team Leader – SWM Engineering to support resourcing needs and the commercial side of projects. You will report to the Team Leader for Sustainable Water Management Engineering.
You will also be responsible for technical assurance, winning work, managing and controlling projects and budgets, and assisting with recruitments. Additionally, you will work with Principal Engineers on team skill development and KPI achievement.
You will oversee engineering design work, ensuring compliance with best practices and UK regulations.
Responsibilities

- Preparation of design solutions, methodologies, and technical reports for drainage projects.

- Implementation of health, safety, CDM and quality assurance governance.
- Undertake the Principal Designer role on large schemes.

Qualifications
- Design and delivery experience of 12+ years with proven knowledge of the UK Water Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCDHW), Manual for Streets, Network Rail Standards, Local Authority Design Guidance, and SuDS Manual.
- Experience in producing infrastructure masterplans, site appraisals, technical reports, design calculations, and construction drawings.
- Good understanding of drainage design, drainage strategies, and flood risk assessment focused on the Water & Transport sector.
- Track record of delivery of large detailed design projects in Drainage/Infrastructure/Transport with a professional services provider.
- Experience with relevant software such as Micro Drainage, Info Drainage, Causeway Flow, Civils 3D, and/or PDS.
- Senior technical experience or subject matter expert in at least one of Highways / Roads / Drainage disciplines.
- Excellent communication, client handling, interpersonal, and influencing skills.
- Ability to lead internal engineering discussions and translate technical issues to non‑technical audiences.
- Self‑starter with initiative, able to work in a team environment.
- Adaptability, ethical conduct, fairness, honesty, and integrity.
- Experience in resource and project management.
- Awareness of emerging technologies related to climate change and sustainability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and strong organisational skills.
- Educated to Bachelor or Master’s level in Water Resources, Environmental Drainage, or Civil Engineering.
- Seasoned professional with at least 12 years of experience in design, project management, and delivery in a consulting engineering environment.
- Chartered Engineer status from a recognised professional institution (e.g. ICE, CIWEM) is preferred.
