Senior Engineer – Drainage – Bengaluru, India

The Senior Engineer – Drainage will serve as a core member of the South Africa Transport & Infrastructure (T&I) team, delivering drainage design and project support from India to the South Africa offices. The role involves conceptual to detailed design, mentorship, client interaction, and business development support.

Responsibilities

• Deliver strategic support for South Africa T&I projects from concept to detailed design.
• Originate, check, and review drainage design drawings with minimal supervision, ensuring compliance with applicable standards.
• Mentor junior colleagues and grow Drainage capability in India.
• Organise, manage, and deliver work to the highest professional standards, ensuring quality, timeliness, and alignment with WSP’s guiding principles.
• Communicate consistently with colleagues in India and South Africa and contribute to team and project meetings.
• Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, supporting Team Leaders, Line Managers, and Project Managers for seamless delivery.
• Take ownership of assigned tasks, demonstrating initiative and research‑driven problem‑solving.
• Support and strengthen client relationships through regular interaction with South Africa offices.
• Participate in knowledge‑sharing forums and support business development activities, including technical input into bids and proposals.
• Uphold Health & Safety commitments across all work practices.
• Ensure accurate and timely completion of project timesheets and documentation.

Mandatory Skills & Experience

• Good knowledge and experience of highway drainage designs, including SuDS features.
• Collaboration with highway geometric design teams for efficient longitudinal drainage solutions.
• Integration of drainage with crossfall and superelevation for effective water management.
• Design of drainage provisions for low points, sag curves, side drains, mitre drains, and sub‑surface systems.
• Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D for surface modelling, corridor integration, pipe networks, and drainage layouts.
• Proficiency with Autodesk AutoCAD for drawing preparation.
• Experience with hydraulic and hydrological tools such as Hydraflow, iDAS (or equivalent), HEC‑RAS / HEC‑HMS, and UPD.
• Preparation of stormwater layout plans, longitudinal sections, culvert schedules, hydraulic summaries, typical details, erosion protection details, and catchment plans.
• Preparation of highway drainage methodologies, design basis statements, and technical notes covering specifications.
• Mentoring and technical support for CAD and engineering staff to develop drainage drawings and standard details.
• Lead and attend design review meetings and progress meetings with clients.
• Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
• Outstanding verbal and written English communication skills; detail‑oriented, proactive, and outcome‑driven.
• Strong client relationship building and maintaining skills.
• High self‑motivation, integrity, professional ethics, and accountability.
• Ability to work independently and under pressure, with strong teamwork and coordination.

Desired Skills

• Recognised professional institution membership (Engineering Council UK or equivalent).
• Knowledge of South Africa drainage design standards.
• B.Tech. in Civil Engineering or equivalent with relevant experience.
• M.Tech in Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in highway drainage and stormwater drainage designs.
