We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realize their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in theroleof Assistant Vice President, Financial Accounting, Insurance

Purpose of the role

Lead HK Insurance finance control under IFRS 17 by delivering a timely and accurate month-end close (Solo & Consolidated), assuring end-to-end ledger completeness and balance sheet substantiation, and maintaining a robust control environment—including proactive governance of IFRS 17 SJE mapping rules to ensure postings align with expected accounting outcomes and are corrected quickly where required. Drive continuous improvement, automation, and accounting change delivery.

In this role, you will:
  • Lead the IFRS 17 accounting process for HK insurance entities, ensuring timely and accurate month-end close (Solo & Consolidated). Own and perform regular review of IFRS 17 Standard Journal Entries (SJEs) and the underlying mapping rules (posting logic from source data/sub-ledgers to the IFRS 17/GL outcomes). Assess whether mapping rules align to expected accounting outcomes (e.g., correct P&L vs Balance Sheet classification, CSM/LIC/LRC movements, liability vs asset presentation, cohort/portfolio attribution, and reporting dimensions).
  • Perform root-cause analysis where results don’t align (e.g., mis-mapping, missing drivers, incorrect account assignment, interface breaks, or rule design gaps) and quantify impact. Recommend and track corrections: raise change requests, agree solution options, and ensure fixes are tested (UAT) and moved into production with appropriate governance and evidence. Communicate clearly with entity finance teams and stakeholders on required corrections, timelines, and expected impacts; ensure actions are closed out and documented.
  • Review, challenge, and sign off month-end adjustments and updated results, ensuring clear audit trail and adherence to accounting policy. Review global insurance results and ensure HK results align with Group reporting expectations and submission timelines.
  • Perform analytical review of financial performance from both: Finance Control perspective (integrity, accuracy, variance explanation), and Business Finance view (commercial insight, drivers, trends). Monitor interface controls, including mapping and integration issues between feeder systems and the core accounting system; resolve exceptions and prevent recurrence.
  • Own the balance sheet substantiation process, ensuring reconciliations are complete, timely, and appropriately evidenced. Maintain strong oversight of balance sheet reconciliations, aged items, intercompany breaks, and suspense positions, with documented action plans to resolution. Manage creditor/debtor/intercompany schedules; monitor and resolve open items and keep stakeholders informed of status, root causes, and remediation plans.
  • Maintain robust controls over all aspects of accounting, aligned to HSBC internal control standards. Own delivery of audit requirements and timely remediation of findings, including internal audits (and where relevant SOX/BRCM-type control frameworks). Ensure policies, procedures, and key controls are documented, operated effectively, and tested as required.
  • Lead and develop a team responsible for month-end activities (reconciliations, accruals, provisions, treasury/cashbook activities, intercompany, and ledger controls). Partner with Product Control, Actuarial, Treasury, Investment teams, Business Finance, and Operations to understand business drivers, product features, and market impacts. Drive projects and identify automation/standardisation opportunities to improve quality, turnaround time, and control effectiveness.
  • Escalate risks early, ensuring proactive controls detect issues before they impact business or external reporting.
  • On-time, accurate IFRS 17 month-end close and reporting for HK entities (Solo & Consolidated). Strong ledger completeness and controlled interfaces from sub-systems to GL. High-quality balance sheet substantiation with reduced aged items and clear remediation ownership. Clean audit outcomes with timely closure of issues and sustainable control improvements. Continuous process improvements and automation that reduce manual effort and operational risk.
To be successful you will:
  • Strong insurance accounting background with hands‑on leadership of IFRS 17 close and reporting processes.
  • Proven finance control capability: ledger integrity, reconciliations, balance sheet substantiation, and variance analysis.
  • Experience leading month‑end close activities end‑to‑end, including accruals, provisions, intercompany, treasury/cashbook, and schedule management.
  • Strong control mindset and experience managing audits and control frameworks (internal audit and/or SOX/BRCM style environments).
  • Stakeholder management skills with ability to explain results, risks, and accounting impacts clearly to senior partners.
  • Demonstrated people leadership and ability to run a high‑performing close/reconciliation team.
