Responsibilities

• Plan, supervise, and execute civil works for electrical substation projects.
• Ensure works comply with drawings, specs, QA/QC and safety standards.
• Monitor site progress, coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, and planning teams.
• Verify quantities against BOQ and drawings; manage RA bills and records.
• Maintain DPRs, quantity statements, and as-built documentation.
• Coordinate with Electrical, Mechanical, Planning, Procurement, QA/QC and Safety teams.
• Read and interpret civil, structural, architectural drawings and IFC drawings.
• Ensure readiness for transformer installation and switchyard equipment erection.
• Ensure compliance with EHS/HSE requirements and site safety procedures.

Job description

The Assistant Manager Civil Engineer will be responsible for planning, supervising, and executing civil construction activities for electrical substation projects. The role involves ensuring timely completion of civil works as per approved drawings, technical specifications, quality standards, safety requirements, and project schedules.

Key Responsibilities

1. Civil Construction & Site Execution

• Supervise and execute civil works for substations, including foundations, control rooms, switchyard structures, cable trenches, equipment foundations, roads, drains, fencing, and other associated infrastructure.
• Ensure construction activities are carried out as per approved drawings, specifications, BOQ, method statements, and project requirements.
• Monitor day-to-day site progress and coordinate with construction teams, subcontractors, and vendors.
• Ensure proper setting out, levels, alignment, excavation, PCC, RCC, reinforcement, shuttering, masonry, plastering, flooring, and finishing works.
• Supervise equipment foundation and structural foundation works for transformers, circuit breakers, isolators, CT/PT, gantry structures, and other substation equipment.

2. Drawing & Technical Coordination

• Study and interpret civil, structural, architectural, and foundation drawings.
• Coordinate with the engineering/design team for drawing revisions, technical clarifications, and site-related issues.
• Ensure construction is executed strictly according to approved IFC drawings.
• Identify discrepancies between drawings and actual site conditions and initiate timely resolution.

3. Planning & Progress Monitoring

• Prepare daily/weekly/monthly civil work plans in coordination with the Project Manager.
• Monitor actual progress against the approved project schedule.
• Identify construction bottlenecks, resource requirements, and potential delays.
• Maintain daily progress reports, DPRs, quantity records, and other project documentation.
• Coordinate with planning and project control teams for progress updates and reporting.

4. Quantity & Billing

• Verify quantities executed at site against BOQ and approved drawings.
• Check subcontractor measurements, RA bills, and work completion records.
• Support preparation and verification of quantity estimates and material requirements.
• Monitor material consumption and minimize wastage.
• Coordinate with the commercial/contracts team regarding variations and additional works.

5. Quality Assurance & Quality Control

• Ensure civil works comply with approved QA/QC procedures and project specifications.
• Coordinate with the QA/QC team for inspection and testing of civil works.
• Ensure proper testing of concrete, reinforcement, soil compaction, aggregates, and other construction materials.
• Monitor concrete pouring, cube testing, curing, waterproofing, and other critical activities.
• Ensure closure of NCRs, observations, and quality-related issues within the required timeline.

6. Subcontractor & Manpower Management

• Supervise civil subcontractors and ensure optimum utilization of manpower, machinery, and materials.
• Monitor subcontractor performance and productivity.
• Coordinate manpower deployment according to project requirements.
• Ensure subcontractors comply with project quality, safety, and documentation requirements.

7. Safety & Compliance

• Ensure all civil construction activities are carried out in accordance with EHS/HSE requirements.
• Coordinate with the Safety team to implement safe working practices.
• Ensure compliance with PPE, work permits, excavation safety, lifting safety, work-at-height requirements, and site safety procedures.
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, and potential hazards.

8. Coordination with Other Departments

• Coordinate with Electrical, Mechanical, Planning, Procurement, QA/QC, Safety, Contracts, and Commercial teams.
• Ensure civil activities are completed in line with electrical equipment installation requirements.
• Coordinate civil readiness for transformer installation, switchyard equipment erection, cable laying, control room works, and other electrical activities.
• Participate in site meetings and provide updates on civil construction progress and constraints.

9. Documentation & Reporting

• Prepare DPR, WPR, progress reports, inspection requests, quantity statements, and work completion reports.
• Maintain records of drawings, revisions, approvals, test reports, and inspection documents.
• Support preparation of as-built drawings and project handover documentation.
• Maintain proper records for audit and client/consultant inspections.

Required Qualification

• B.E./B.Tech/Diploma in Civil Engineering.
• Preferably 8 10 years of relevant experience in EPC, Power, Transmission & Distribution, Substation, or Infrastructure projects.

Desired Skills

• Strong knowledge of civil construction and substation infrastructure works.
• Good understanding of RCC, foundation, structural, and finishing works.
• Ability to read civil/structural drawings and BOQs.
• Knowledge of AutoCAD and MS Office.
• Exposure to Primavera/MS Project will be an advantage.
• Strong subcontractor and manpower management skills.
• Good knowledge of QA/QC and HSE requirements.
• Strong communication, coordination, and problem-solving abilities.
