Job description

Application Engineer – Hardware Integration

Level I / II

Wirepas Platform for AMI

Department: Customer & Product Success – AMI India

Location: India (hybrid; frequent domestic travel to meter manufacturers, occasional international travel)

Job Description

Wirepas is hiring an Application Engineer – Hardware Integration to join our AMI India team. You will be the technical owner of the hardware integration journey between Wirepas and our meter manufacturer partners based in India.

Your mission is to enable meter manufacturers to design, validate, certify and mass‑produce their own Wirepas Certified meters – based on our reference design, virtual modules and integration flow – and to guarantee that every meter that ships under the Wirepas Certified mark meets our performance, reliability and interoperability bar.

You will not be designing the customer’s hardware. You will be enabling them to do it well – supporting them across architecture, schematic and Gerber reviews, antenna placement and tuning, NIC bring‑up, production JIG development, provisioning, BIS / MTCTE certification and mass‑production readiness. You will work hand‑in‑hand with our partners antenna, silicon and module vendors and with our internal teams in India, Finland and France.

As Wirepas’ trusted hardware face in India, you will also contribute back to the platform: improving our reference design, our integration flow, our customer documentation and our learning loop. You will report progress internally to Customer Project Managers and management, and own the agreed integration timelines with each meter manufacturer.

About you

You are a self‑starter who can run several meter integrations in parallel without losing the thread on any of them. You combine the rigor of a hardware engineer with the empathy of a customer‑facing engineer: you read schematics and Gerbers carefully, you keep checklists alive, and you can explain a tricky RF or production‑test issue clearly to a customer VP, a subcontractor or a Wirepas R&D engineer.

You like making things work end‑to‑end. You see the design review, the soldering iron, the spectrum analyzer, the test JIG and the customer call as parts of the same job. You are comfortable in a lab and equally comfortable in front of a customer.

You like working with teams of diverse talent and should see opportunities where other people see challenges. You can build relations with your colleagues, to help your customers locally. Having the ability to manage multiple projects at once comes easy for you.

This position requires regular domestic travel across India to meter manufacturer sites, and occasional international travel.

Responsibilities
  • Customer hardware integration: Support meter manufacturers throughout their NIC card design, prototyping, testing, certification (MTCTE, BIS) and mass‑production setup. Lead architecture and schematic / Gerber design reviews against Wirepas virtual module specifications and reference designs.
  • Hardware bring‑up and validation: Perform the initial bring‑up of new customer NICs (RF NIC and Dual Communication NIC), validate the basic functionality (UART, SPI, I²C, GPIO, power, RF front‑end, antenna tuning, range measurements) and steer the customer and partners (e.g. antenna design house) to complete the full validation. Hands‑on with scope, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer / VNA, soldering and rework; manage subcontractors when rework is not feasible in‑house.
  • Wirepas Certified gate: Define and ensure that all defined processes, checklists and gates of the Wirepas Certified integration flow are followed end‑to‑end (NDA & licensing, software integration, hardware integration, production testing, production provisioning) so that the performance and reliability of the customer hardware can be guaranteed in the field.
  • Embedded SW for integration: Build, flash and run embedded test / application binaries on customer hardware to verify a first level of functionality and interfaces. Work with the Wirepas embedded software team to port the AMI v2 NIC application and OTAP onto customer NICs.
  • Production testing and provisioning: Drive the design and bring‑up of production test JIGs at meter manufacturer factories, deliver the Wirepas‑side production test and provisioning scripts, and validate the end‑of‑line flow before mass production.
  • Reference design and ecosystem: Contribute to the Wirepas reference design – manage specifications and design reviews with our subcontractors, ensure timely availability of reference hardware and run validation, maintain and improve the customer‑facing documentation (design guidelines, integration flow, checklists), and feed customer learnings back into the next reference iteration.
  • Project execution and reporting: Maintain agreed integration timelines with each meter manufacturer, organize and animate regular meetings. Report status, risks and decisions to Customer Project Managers and management.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics, Electronics & Communication, Telecommunication or related engineering discipline.
  • Solid embedded / RF hardware background, with hands‑on exposure to wireless products (sub‑GHz / 2.4 GHz / LTE / NB‑IoT / cellular modules). Smart‑meter or NIC card experience is a strong plus.
  • Comfortable reading and reviewing schematics and PCB layouts; able to spot integration risks early. Practical experience with Altium (our reference design is delivered as an Altium project) is highly desirable.
  • Comfortable in a hardware lab: oscilloscope, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer. Soldering and rework, including the ability to manage subcontractors when needed.
  • Embedded C and basic firmware skills, sufficient to build, flash and bring up a board and verify interfaces (UART, SPI, I²C, GPIO) – not a firmware developer role, but you must be able to operate one level into the firmware.
  • Exposure to production test JIG development, end‑of‑line testing and provisioning flows at a contract manufacturer / OEM factory.
  • Comfortable being the single Wirepas hardware face in a customer’s or subcontractor’s meeting room. Strong ownership, discipline with checklists and trackers, and clear written and spoken English.
  • Working comfortably across time zones in a remote set‑up. We’re a global team, so that sometimes means early mornings or late evenings – whatever it takes to support the customer and get things done.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, highly self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, with a Can‑Do attitude and the drive to proactively improve our integration flow and customer experience.
Preferred
  • Experience in Smart Metering with hands‑on experience with DLMS, IS 15959 Part 2 and SBD standards used in Indian smart metering.
  • Prior experience as a field application engineer, hardware integration engineer or customer‑facing hardware lead in IoT, metering, automotive or industrial electronics.
  • Exposure to mesh networking, Wirepas, Wi‑SUN, Zigbee, Thread or similar wireless ecosystems.
Benefits
  • Nordic work culture of trust, responsibility, freedom, and value for flat hierarchies.
  • Challenging work in the technology field. Not just fridges on the internet, but real impact: millions of meters already deployed in India on Wirepas, and a clear roadmap to 10M+.
  • Genuinely international working culture with the best talents and bright minds across India, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, UK, US and Australia.
  • The basics: indefinite contract with money to your bank account. Sometimes it’s not just the monthly remuneration but also bonuses.
  • We want you to see the success you’re a part of, so we offer options for Wirepas shares.
