The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of technical leadership and success in resolving complex issues, either independently or collaboratively. They will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of networking concepts and theory, with experience managing proactive engineering, network optimization, and operational support for large-scale service providers or enterprise environments. They will provide high-quality network event management for Amazon’s global network, manage stakeholder relationships, and be passionate about working with new technologies.

As a Network Development Engineer within AWS Infrastructure, you will:

  • Provide critical on-shift network operations support to diagnose and respond to large-scale events.
  • Support and maintain our next-generation networks.
  • Deliver simple, sustainable, and repeatable solutions and processes.
  • Partner with our Technical Operations team to reduce operational burden.
  • Work closely with Network Engineering & Deployment teams to ensure operational readiness for new deployments.
  • Drive standards across the network and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in impact mitigation during large-scale events, utilizing established Event Management processes.
  • Conduct deep dives into large-scale events, document findings, and drive corrective actions.
  • Enhance detection mechanisms by designing and implementing new alerts.
  • Identify and troubleshoot recurring platform issues, engaging with engineering teams for resolution.
  • Create and review documentation and processes for recurring issues, SOPs, and knowledge transfer.
  • Troubleshoot network connectivity issues, including device configurations and application interactions.
  • Identify opportunities to automate tasks through scripting and tools.
  • Contribute to hiring and developing team members.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or relevant work experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of major internet routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, etc.).
  • Experience with Cisco & Juniper router platforms, including all compatible hardware components.
  • Excellent network fundamentals and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Extensive experience with TCP, UDP, DNS, or DHCP.
  • Experience with fault, configuration, and performance management tools.
  • Proficiency with scripting languages such as Python.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expertise in Routing & Switching technologies.
  • Experience with IPSec / Remote Access VPN or Wireless (802.11x).
  • CCNP/CCIE certification is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Network Automation fundamentals.
  • Experience in lab testing and certification of networking devices.
  • Experience working with carriers for provisioning and operating data networks.
  • Customer problem resolution experience under pressure.
  • Mentoring and coaching junior engineers.
  • Strategic influence within and outside the team.
  • Alignment with Amazon’s leadership principles and technical depth.
  • Knowledge of IT best practices frameworks (ITIL, COBIT) and operational excellence.
  • Excellent prioritization, time management, and analytical skills.
  • Physical ability to sit for an 8-hour shift and maintain high alertness.
  • Flexibility for follow-the-sun shifts and on-call duties, including weekends and holidays.
