About thebusinessunit

The Buildings Unit (BLD) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.

Overview of the role

Join our award-winning healthcare team and help shape the future of healthcare infrastructure across the UK and Ireland. As one of the world's leading employee-owned engineering consultancies, we are delivering some of the most complex and high-profile healthcare programmes in the sector, including major acute hospital developments, Community Diagnostic Centres, specialist treatment facilities, mental health estates, and large-scale refurbishment and decarbonisation programmes for HSE, NHS Trusts, Health Boards and private healthcare providers.

Our healthcare business brings together electrical, mechanical, public health, digital, sustainability and specialist advisory services to deliver integrated solutions that improve patient outcomes and create resilient, future-ready facilities. You will have the opportunity to work alongside nationally recognised healthcare leaders and multidisciplinary teams delivering projects from strategic planning and business case development through to detailed design, construction and handover.

As a Technical Principal, you will provide technical leadership across a portfolio of healthcare projects while supporting the growth and development of our Building Services team. You will be part of a national healthcare leadership network and will typically lead multidisciplinary MEP teams comprising engineers, technicians and graduate engineers. Depending on project requirements and team structure, you may also provide line management, mentoring and technical oversight to junior and intermediate engineers, supporting their professional development and progression towards chartership.

You will be expected to lead the technical delivery of complex healthcare projects, ensuring compliance with HTM, HBN, BS 7671, CIBSE, HSE requirements and local authority approvals and other sector-specific standards. The role will involve overseeing design quality, managing project resources, coordinating multidisciplinary inputs and supporting project directors in delivering projects to programme and budget. You will act as a trusted advisor to clients, participate in design reviews and provide technical assurance across major healthcare commissions.

The successful candidate will utilise industry-leading digital tools and technologies including BIM and Revit, Navisworks, digital engineering workflows, building performance modelling, and advanced healthcare planning tools. You will also contribute to the adoption of innovative engineering solutions that enhance operational resilience, energy performance and patient experience.

Sustainability is embedded within everything we do. You will help drive low-carbon design strategies, electrification of heat, embodied carbon reduction, circular economy principles, net-zero carbon pathways and whole-life asset optimisation. Working closely with our sustainability specialists, you will support clients in achieving their environmental and social value objectives while delivering technically robust healthcare facilities. In addition to technical delivery, you will play a key role in work-winning and business growth. This includes supporting bids, framework appointments and interview presentations, developing client relationships, identifying new opportunities, contributing to fee proposals, and helping shape our healthcare market strategy.

You will be expected to provide technical input into major pursuits and support the development of our healthcare pipeline across the UK and Ireland.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced healthcare engineer who wants to influence nationally significant projects, contribute to the development of future healthcare infrastructure, and help grow one of the industry's leading healthcare engineering teams.

  • A Degree level (Irish NFQ Level 8) qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent together with Chartered Engineer status (CEng) through an appropriate professional institution
  • Significant experience leading the design and delivery of complex healthcare projects, with a strong understanding of NHS and healthcare sector requirements, including HTMs, HBNs, relevant British Standards and Irish legislation, HSE requirements and local authority approvals
  • Proven ability to provide technical leadership and assurance across multidisciplinary MEP projects, managing design quality, project risks, programme requirements and stakeholder expectations from concept through to completion
  • Strong client-facing skills, with experience developing trusted relationships with healthcare clients, contractors, supply chain partners and multidisciplinary project teams
  • Experience contributing to work-winning activities, including fee proposals, bids, framework submissions, presentations and business development initiatives
  • Excellent communication, leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to develop engineers, influence decision-making and contribute positively to team culture and technical excellence
  • Experience delivering major acute hospital developments, Community Diagnostic Centres, mental health facilities, laboratories, specialist treatment facilities or wider healthcare estate transformation programmes
  • Experience working within UK and/or Ireland healthcare markets and established relationships with NHS Trusts, Health Boards, HSE, contractors or healthcare framework organisations
  • Experience acting in a discipline lead, project director, design lead, resource management or people leadership capacity within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment
  • Knowledge of digital engineering and BIM delivery processes, including Revit, Navisworks, Common Data Environments and data-led design approaches
  • Experience of developing low-carbon and net-zero healthcare solutions, including whole-life carbon assessment, electrification strategies, heat decarbonisation and sustainable healthcare infrastructure
  • A track record of technical innovation, thought leadership, publication, conference presentation or active participation in industry and professional institutions

This role would particularly suit a technically strong healthcare engineer who combines project delivery excellence with leadership, client engagement and a passion for developing the next generation of engineers.
