Job summary

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) invites applications for a part-time Teacher Practitioner – Leadership based at our Dublin campuses. The role is up to 0.5 FTE on a fixed-term 12-month contract, reporting to the Director of Curriculum and working within the School of Medicine.

The post focuses on teaching, co-ordination and examination of undergraduate medical programmes and supports the development of a new curriculum in PPID—Leadership and management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to quality assurance, accreditation and examination processes.
  • Engage in student support through personal tutoring and student affairs initiatives.
  • Utilise technology-enhanced learning and participate in teaching and learning strategy.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals and clinical staff as appropriate.

Job Title: Teacher Practitioner – Leadership

Reporting To: Director of Curriculum

Location: RCSI St Stephen’s Green Campus, Dublin 2 / Smurfit Beaumont Education Research Centre (ERC), Dublin 9.

School (or department): School of Medicine

Contract type/duration: Part-time (Up to 0.5FTE) – Fixed Term (12-months)

Objective of this post

The principal objective of the post is to provide teaching, co-ordination and examining of RCSI’s undergraduate medical teaching programmes, and to support the development of a new medical curriculum, in the area of PPID – Leadership and management skills.

RCSI is seeking a professional who is passionate about teaching, who would like to contribute to working as a Teacher Practitioner in a multicultural environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate energy, initiative and excellent organisation and communication skills.

The post- holder will be based in the School of Medicine as part of THEP team.

Specific Responsibilities include
  • Preparation, delivery and assessment - ensuring at all times that material is in line with international best practice, on our undergraduate programmes as required, with a particular emphasis on small group case based teaching
  • Develop and facilitate engaging education sessions with students towards developing their understanding of professionalism, and their self- awareness of personal values, principles and assumptions towards enhancing their leadership and decision‑making in professional healthcare, clinical and life sciences settings
  • Share knowledge and develop and facilitate practical case‑based scenarios in order to enhance students understanding of leadership, management, and quality improvement models and framework across healthcare, clinical and life sciences settings
  • Identification of opportunities for Interprofessional Learning and delivery of Interprofessional Education
  • Utilising a student‑centred approach to all duties so as to ensure optimal educational outcomes
  • Participating in the delivery of our teaching and learning strategy including the effective use of technology‑enhanced learning
  • Liaising with healthcare professionals and professionals in clinical settings as appropriate
  • Leading or advising on modules within various programmes including coordinating integrated teaching activities across a range of disciplines – the core focus being to nurture and develop awareness and skills amongst our students of the importance of professionalism, leadership and resilience development
  • Participating in cross‑functional teams to design and deliver academic programmes
  • Contributing to the quality assurance/quality improvement and accreditation of all programmes
  • Competent discharge of teacher practitioner administrative duties and engagement across the Schools and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, in aspects such as attendance at examination boards, team meetings etc.
  • Supporting students through student affairs initiatives, such as personal tutoring, and other initiatives, as appropriate
  • Complying with statutory legislation and RCSI’s rules and requirements in furtherance of your own, staff and student welfare and safety
  • Promoting the best interests of RCSI at all times, enhancing reputation in education delivery – finding ways to showcase RCSI’s competence in transversal skills development for students
  • Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time
  • A good knowledge of health and/or life sciences settings and the role of transversal skills
  • Has knowledge and experience of providing education or training, including these topics
  • Has excellent presentation and verbal communication skills,
  • Has the ability to design and deliver effective and engaging education,
  • Has excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well as a member of a team,
  • Has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships,
  • Has excellent influencing and negotiating skills,
