On behalf of our client, a leading international engineering and infrastructure contractor delivering major EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) projects within the energy transmission, distribution and building infrastructure sectors, we are seeking an experienced Senior Structural Design Engineer to join their expanding in-house structural steel design and detailing team in Kildare. Our client is significantly growing its in-house structural steel capabilities on the back of a strong project pipeline, and this senior role will lead the design of steel structures and connections for major building and infrastructure projects across Ireland and the UK.
Main Purpose of Role:
As Senior Structural Design Engineer, you will lead steelwork design and connection design, working closely with the design manager to ensure all designs and connections are safe, efficient and fully compliant with relevant codes, quality standards and health & safety requirements, while coordinating with fabrication and construction teams to support successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and review steel connections for structural steelwork, including calculation reports, drawings and 3D models that are accurate, practical and compliant with Eurocode & BS5950 and project specifications.
- Ensure designs support safe and efficient fabrication and erection.
- Oversee the quality of design deliverables through checks, peer reviews and design risk assessments.
- Resolve steel design-related issues during fabrication and construction, addressing technical queries and on-site challenges with safe, compliant solutions.
- Coordinate with temporary works and methods teams where required, and provide temporary works design for Project Managers as needed.
- Develop standard details, use design tools effectively and identify value-engineering opportunities to improve design efficiency.
- Support the development of junior engineers through guidance and design review.
- Represent the steelwork design discipline in meetings, clearly communicating progress and design decisions to clients, design managers and third-party reviewers.
Requirements:
- Level 8 degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; a master's degree is an advantage.
- Chartered status, or a clear path toward chartership, strongly preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years' structural steel design experience, including substantial steel connection and temporary works design experience.
- Solid understanding of structural analysis and design principles, plus knowledge of fabrication and erection processes.
- Strong understanding of Eurocode 3, BS5950, BS5975 and associated standards.
- Ability to carry out hand calculations, with hand drawing skill essential alongside AutoCAD proficiency.
- Proficiency in at least one design/analysis package (Tekla Structural Designer, Robot or similar), plus IDEA StatiCa, MasterSeries Connection or Tekla Connection Designer.
- Strong organisational, communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and mentor junior staff.
- Strong commitment to safety in design, including understanding of CDM principles.
- Right to live and work in Ireland.
