Job summary

Uber Technologies Inc. in Ireland is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to define and build the next generation of real-time matching optimization systems for riders and drivers in a two-sided marketplace.

You will own major optimization charters, set technical direction, and lead 0→1 projects from formulation through production deployment, applying reinforcement learning, sequential decision-making, and advanced modeling to scale to a global system.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of industry experience in machine learning, or 6+ years with a PhD or equivalent demonstrated depth.
• Significant experience building large-scale production ML systems, including online inference.
• Deep expertise in modern ML including deep learning, reinforcement learning, and decision-making under uncertainty.
• Ability to formulate ambiguous problems as tractable ML/decision problems and drive them to production with strong programming and systems skills.
• Experience leading technically complex, cross-functional initiatives and influencing direction beyond a single project.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction and own major charters for Uber's real-time matching optimization and ML systems.
• Design matching objectives and decision policies balancing marketplace goals.
• Develop and productionize ML-based decision systems for sequential and multi-agent environments.
• Apply RL, probabilistic modeling, deep learning, causal inference to large-scale marketplace problems.
• Explore model predictive control and feedback-control for adapting matching behavior.
• Build behavioral models of rider/driver responses and incorporate into optimization.
• Develop simulation, experimentation, and causal measurement frameworks to evaluate policies.
• Lead ambiguous 0→1 technical efforts from problem definition to production inference.
• Identify opportunities for new algorithms or modeling approaches to improve performance.
• Collaborate with engineering, economics, product, and operations to translate problems into scalable solutions.
• Mentor senior engineers and raise technical bar for ML and optimization.
