Staff Infra Engineer — Cloud, Storage & Compute

Job summary

Toast’s Staff Infrastructure Engineer on the Compute & Storage Platform team will design, build, and operate foundational distributed systems powering Toast as it expands into international markets. You will bridge core infrastructure and product development—building low-latency storage, scalable compute clusters, and high-throughput streaming pipelines to enable product delivery across the PDLC.

This is a hybrid role requiring in-office presence two days per week.

Qualifications

• Experience building scalable AWS infrastructure with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.).
• Fluency in Python or Go for automation, tooling, or backend development.
• Deep experience operating and tuning enterprise databases (Postgres, MySQL, Oracle) and NoSQL (DynamoDB, OpenSearch).
• Experience with containerized environments and orchestration (Docker, ECS, Kubernetes).
• Solid understanding of SRE principles: monitoring, alerting, health checks, and performance troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

• Architect, deploy, and manage low-latency, highly available storage solutions (RDS Postgres, Aurora Postgres, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, S3).
• Ensure sub-second end-user latency, near-zero-downtime reliability, and high throughput across storage engines.
• Automate infrastructure provisioning and compute pipelines for AI-driven PDLC workflows.
• Right-size compute/storage resources and implement autoscaling while controlling AWS costs.
