Job summary

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Co in Dublin is seeking a data engineer to join the enterprise data platform team. You will build data pipelines, analyze data lake and warehouse datasets, and deliver insights for customers.

The role offers a hybrid working model with collaboration across data science, learning science and product teams, and opportunities to mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications

• ETL and data processing experience required.
• Proficiency with Python and Java (Spring Boot beneficial).
• Experience with AWS services including VPC, Glue, S3, Lambda, Lake Formation, Athena, IAM.
• Experience with CI/CD tooling and Terraform.
• Strong SQL and relational database skills.
• Kubernetes experience beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Help customers maximize business value by analyzing and documenting data lake and warehouse datasets.
• Lead design and implementation of data pipelines to populate data lake and warehouse using PySpark on AWS Glue, Kafka Connect, Kinesis Firehose.
• Work independently on major system components.
• Improve data infrastructure on AWS using Terraform and Concourse.
• Collaborate with data science, learning science and product teams to develop analytics capabilities and BI dashboards.
• Architect solutions for customer problems and coordinate with Architecture function for approval.
• Automate and improve internal processes; mentor junior team members.
• Continuously seek best practices and bring ideas to improve technology practices.

About the team you’re joining:

You’ll join the HMH data engineering team – here we get data into our Enterprise Data Lake and Enterprise Data Warehouse, and perform interesting data modelling. You’ll be helping to build a data platform and using it to analyse datasets and how they relate to each other to help answer customer’s questions.

You’ll be taking data from different sources, using big data tools to build data pipelines to serve our customer’s needs. We have many different consumers of our data, from data scientists to BI analysts to APIs. As a small and focused team, there’s a lot of flexibility, we give you the opportunity to work across many areas, to hone your data skills to where your passions lie.

More specifically you’ll be:

• Helping our customers gain the most business value from our data platform by analysing, understanding and documenting our data lake and data warehouse datasets and supporting customers to empower them to answer their own questions


• Leading in the design and implementation of data pipelines to populate our Enterprise Data Lake and Enterprise Data Warehouse using tools such as PySpark on AWS Glue, kafka connect, kinesis firehose.


• Working independently on major system components.


• Improving data infrastructure on AWS using deployment tools such as terraform, concourse.


• Working closely with our data science, learning science and product teams to develop our data analytics capabilities, curate datasets and build out valuable business intelligence dashboards.


• Architecting solutions for our customer’s problems and liaising with our Architecture function to get these solutions approved and implemented.


• Automating and improving our internal processes.


• Mentoring and coaching more junior members of the team.

Knowledge & Experience

• ETL or data processing and orchestration experience.


• Experience in python, java – spring boot would be beneficial.


• AWS stack experience on a variety of the following services – VPC, Glue, s3, Lambda, Lake Formation, Athena, IAM.


• Experience in CI/CD tooling and terraform.


• Experience in SQL and working with relational databases.


• Kubernetes experience would be beneficial but not essential.
