Role: Software Development Manager

Location: Mayo, Hybrid

Type: Permanent

Overview: The role is responsible for the day-to-day execution of engineering activities, including people leadership, delivery predictability, engineering quality, process maturity, and operational readiness. It is a critical cross-functional position that collaborates closely with Product Management, Architecture, Project Delivery, QA, DevOps, and Support to translate business and technical priorities into dependable software delivery, while also enabling innovation and supporting the longer-term technology strategy.

Experience & Background

• 7+ years of experience in software engineering, including 3+ years leading engineering teams.
• Experience delivering enterprise SaaS and/or cloud-based platforms.
• Strong experience working within Agile delivery environments, with a proven track record of owning commitments and delivering outcomes.
• Experience managing distributed and/or multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
• Azure Cloud technologies and modern cloud engineering practices.
• Distributed systems, APIs, integrations, and event-driven architectures.
• DevOps, CI/CD, test automation, and engineering quality practices.
• Data and analytics platforms, supported by a broad understanding of modern software delivery tools and technologies.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and develop engineers, technical leads, and senior developers. Conduct regular one-to-one meetings, performance reviews, and career development discussions. Measure and assess the performance and productivity of engineers using balanced indicators across delivery, quality, contribution, and development objectives. Support recruitment, onboarding, retention, and skills development initiatives, while fostering strong collaboration across engineering and related teams.
• Own delivery commitments across assigned development streams. Ensure sprint commitments are realistic, manage team capacity and resource allocation, track milestones and release plans, remove delivery blockers, and elevate risks as needed to achieve predictable and repeatable delivery outcomes.
• Partner with Architects and Technical Leads to ensure solutions remain aligned with strategic direction and established engineering standards. Promote scalable, maintainable, and supportable designs, including cloud-native, API-first, and event-driven approaches where appropriate.
• Champion high standards of code quality, peer review, automated testing, and CI/CD practices. Proactively manage technical debt and documentation, support root-cause analysis of production issues, and reinforce a "build quality in" mindset rather than relying solely on downstream testing.
• Ensure effective adoption of Azure DevOps and Agile delivery practices, including planning, backlog refinement, estimation, tracking, and retrospectives. Drive improvements in process maturity and provide transparent delivery visibility through appropriate reporting, dashboards, and metrics.
• Work closely with Product Managers and stakeholders to understand priorities and ensure technical solutions align with customer and commercial objectives. Support the resolution of development-related customer escalations and balance short-term delivery requirements with long-term platform sustainability.
• Ensure all development activities adhere to company processes, engineering governance standards, security requirements, and data protection obligations. Maintain appropriate traceability and documentation throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Ensure releases are production-ready by reviewing deployment plans and associated risks in collaboration with QA and DevOps teams. Monitor post-release outcomes and drive continuous improvements in stability, resilience, supportability, and operational effectiveness.
