Job summary

Bord Gáis Energy in Athlone is seeking a Shift Operations Technician to support a 24/7 on-site operation, with some travel for training. This permanent role requires flexibility in shift patterns and a proactive, safety‑driven mindset.

You will monitor assets, control and dispatch in line with regulations, collaborate with teams and external partners, and provide concise reports to drive continuous improvement and safe operations.

Qualifications

• Qualified or extensive experience in Electrical, Controls, Process, Systems engineering or Computer Science
• Post-qualification experience in Operations & Engineering in an energy-related company is beneficial
• Experience in an energy assets operations environment or control rooms is advantageous

Responsibilities

• Engage with key teams to support zero-harm safety and environmental culture and ensure compliance with REMIT, permits and licenses
• Monitor energy assets locally and remotely to identify issues
• Maximise asset operational efficiency in line with licences and permits
• Control and dispatch assets per local regulations
• Manage events and issues, escalating to minimise impact and support investigations
• Provide professional, concise communications to internal and external stakeholders
• Maintain accurate records and ensure timely completion of routines
• Ensure thorough handovers between shifts for safe operations and continuity
• Contribute to SLA-driven team performance and reporting
• Produce reports detailing asset availability and performance patterns
• Collaborate with Site, Asset Development, Operations, Trading, Finance, Regulation & DTS on technical support

Shift Operations Technician

Location: Athlone - On-Site with some travel required to other sites for training/meeting purposes

Competitive salary & shift allowance

Due to the nature of our 24/7 operation, this position requires participation in a rotating shift pattern and standby rota. Full flexibility regarding working hours and shift arrangements is essential.

Key Accountabilities

• Engagement and collaboration with key teams to support the development of a Zero harm and continuous improvement safety and environmental culture and ensure Safety, contractual, REMIT, Permit & License compliance.
• Monitoring energy assets both locally and remotely to highlight any issues
• Maximise Asset operational efficiency in line with contractual, Licence & Permit requirements
• Control, & Dispatch of Assets in line with local regulations and rules
• Managing events and unforeseen issues and escalating as required to minimise the impact and support event investigations to deliver a continuous improvement culture
• Providing professional, concise communications to a variety of internal and external stakeholders
• Maintain accurate records of all tasks undertaken and ensure routines are completed in an accurate and timely manner
• Ensuring a comprehensive and thorough handover takes place between shift teams to maintain continuity of safe operations and ensure ongoing knowledge of work activities.
• Working efficiently in an SLA (Service Level Agreement) driven team environment
• Producing reports detailing asset availability and performance patterns
• Adhering to all applicable company policies, procedures and business ethics codes
• Close collaboration with multiple internal business units such as Site teams, Asset Development, Operations, Trading, Finance, Regulation & DTS – providing technical advice and support services facilitating the success and growth of these areas

• Engagement with external stakeholders such as system operators, transmission operators, regulators, compliance bodies and OEM’s
• Take part in project teams or manage various projects as the business requires

Experience & Functional/Technical Skills required

• Proven ability to manage multiple stakeholders
• Experience in the Operation of Energy Assets and SCADA control systems
• Data analytical skills, beneficial if experienced on PI Systems, Power BI and Excel
• Ability to source, combine, analyse and presentation of large datasets.
• Experience in an Operations Environment or Control rooms or experience in Energy Assets or process environment

Education and Certifications required to perform the role

• Qualification or extensive experience in (e.g., Electrical, Controls, Process, Systems engineering or Computer Science)
• Post qualification experience in a role involving Operations & Engineering work, in an energy related company is beneficial

Desirable but not essential

• Knowledge of energy markets and System Service markets and how energy assets interacts with these markets will be an advantage.
• Experience of Operational environments and Control rooms
• experience working with EDIL and Remit processes
