Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to the provision of a medical physics service to diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine therapies for the delivery of high quality, safe and value conscious healthcare services.
• Provide appropriate scientific support and advice to quality assurance programmes in ionising and non-ionising radiation modalities.
• Act on own initiative to develop scientific solutions to meet the requirements of an evolving service.
• Participate in the optimisation of imaging to improve diagnostic quality and obtain relevant clinical information.
• Participate in the radiation protection programme for diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine.
• Ensure that all aspects of their duties comply with statutory requirement and best practice guidance.
• Generate and undertake clinically applied research and development.
• Provide physics support to non-ionising and ionising imaging and therapy equipment in areas within their skillset/expertise.
• Provide on-going support for new protocols/services
• Develop protocols and procedures for new applications.
• Carry out appropriate risk assessments.
• Assist in the specification and commissioning of new equipment and software, and upgrades to same.
• To contribute to audits to inform patient management and clinical care
• To participate in departmental seminars and scientific meetings to disseminate knowledge acquired through study or research
• To carry out any other reasonable duties to achieve learning and experience that may be required, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post
• To undertake other duties to maintain existing services or assist in the development of new services
• Acquire and maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests, investigations and measurements carried out
• Interpret and act upon results of tests, investigations and measurements in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and quality systems
• Comment and advise on new proposals and protocols, especially for service improvements
• Assist in the provision of advice to medical, nursing and other healthcare staff on the optimal and safe use of scientific procedures and highly complex equipment, including assisting in the design of new facilities.
• Assist in the provision of training to junior members of the team.
• Supervise research work carried out as required.
• Lecture other professional groups and students as required.
• Be responsible for the safe use of complex scientific and medical equipment, including recording all maintenance and calibration procedures performed and any corrective actions undertaken.
• Use reagents, consumables, hazardous materials and equipment safely and in accordance with Health and Safety policies.
• Comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Legislation.
• Comply with quality and governance procedures within the department including risk management and risk mitigation.
• Maintain high standards of professional and personal conduct.
• Participate in a staff review.
• Retain sufficient flexibility and adaptability in learning to ensure full contribution to improving services in response to changing health care needs.
• Maintain knowledge of recent scientific developments and undertake supplementary training to develop both knowledge and skills.
• Complete mandatory training as required.
