Job summary

The Office of Public Works (OPW) seeks a Senior Engineering Draughtsperson (Civil & Structural) in Meath to support project Engineers on civil and structural tasks. You will supervise Engineering Draughtspersons where required and contribute to drawing production and documentation.

Key duties include creating preliminary, tender and construction drawings, ensuring ISO 9001 compliance, attending site meetings, and coordinating CAD & BIM work across multi-disciplinary teams.

Qualifications

  • Qualification at minimum NFQ Level 6 in Civil Engineering or related discipline; NFQ equivalent.
  • Eng. Tech MIEI title with at least three years' Civil/Structural experience.
  • Experience with CAD/BIM drawings and ISO 19650 awareness.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil/Structural drawing production.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare Preliminary, Tender and Construction drawings and documents.
  • Ensure ISO 9001 procedures for document control.
  • Attend site meetings during construction.
  • Allocate work requests to Draughtspersons.
  • Produce CAD & BIM drawings for Civil/Structural projects; topographic surveys.

About the Employer:

The Office of Public Works (OPW) is a key service provider to the Government. A core part of its remit is maintaining and presenting Ireland's most iconic heritage sites & properties. OPW are responsible for the management and maintenance of the State's property portfolio, providing accommodation to central Government Departments, An Garda Síochána and other State agencies. It is also the lead agency for flood risk management in Ireland.

Civil & Structural Engineering Section

The Civil and Structural Engineering section in the OPW provides a full Civil & Structural and Engineering Design Service on a large variety of projects for OPW and other Government Departments. They also provide an Advisory and/or Supervisory Service for Civil/Structural Engineering Projects requested by other OPW areas. The section is headed by an Assistant Chief Engineer and is part of the Office of the State/Principal Architect's division within OPW.

About the Role:

Reporting to a Principal Engineering Draughtsperson or a designated Engineer Grade I or II, Senior Engineering Draughtspersons will have responsibility for providing technical support to OPW Project Engineers on Civil & Structural Engineering projects. They will also supervise Engineering Draughtspersons where required.

The Principal Duties and Responsibilities of the Role may include some or all of the following:

  • Preparing Preliminary, Tender and Construction drawings & documents for projects undertaken by the Civil & Structural Engineering section;
  • Ensuring that ISO 9001 procedures are adhered to regarding the production, registering and issue of documents;
  • Attending site meetings on projects during construction;
  • Allocating work requests to Engineering Draughtspersons;
  • Responsibility for the production of CAD & BIM Drawings on Civil and/or Structural projects including but not limited to;
  • General arrangement drawings,
  • Details drawings including steel, masonry, timber and reinforced concrete details of structural elements,
  • Civil engineering drawings including drainage, wastewater treatment, retaining walls, small bridges, car-parks etc.,
  • Topographical Surveys on lands, buildings and civil engineering structures.
About You:

Candidates must have on or before 3rd of September 2026:

  • 1. (a) A qualification at minimum Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) (or NARIC Ireland Foreign Qualifications equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related discipline such as Structural Engineering, Construction/Construction Management, Building Surveying etc.
  • and (b) At least three years' relevant post-qualification experience in Civil and/or Structural Engineering.
  • OR 2. (a) Achieved the professional title of Engineering Technician (Eng. Tech MIEI)
  • and (b) At least three years' relevant experience in Civil and/or Structural Engineering.
  • 3. Experience in building & civil construction projects including experience of preparing Preliminary, Tender and Construction drawings & documents;
  • 4. Experience in the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and an awareness of ISO 19650 standards, Revit Structure and the use of Common Data Environments;
  • 5. An excellent level of proficiency in AutoCAD;
  • 6. Knowledge of relevant Irish building regulations, codes and standards;
  • 7. Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team environment;
  • 8. A demonstrated ability to tackle problems of a technical and/or management nature with a practical and flexible approach;
  • 9. A demonstrated ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines with attention to detail;
  • 10. A commitment to achieving quality results and ensuring all tasks are completed to a very high standard;
  • 11. The ability to work independently, capable of operating under own initiative;
  • 12. The ability to supervise, motivate and support staff in a dynamic operational environment;
  • 13. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders;
  • 14. A demonstrated ongoing commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD);
  • 15. Good Information Technology (IT) skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
