Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer
Permanent ¦¦ Hybrid (4 Days Onsite) ¦¦ Shannon, Co. Clare
TechHeads is currently seeking an experienced Senior Embedded Software Design & Verification Engineer to design, develop and verify low-level embedded software for advanced electronic control systems operating within a highly regulated environment.
This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone who enjoys working close to the hardware, developing efficient bare-metal software and supporting projects from concept through to verification and delivery. While this is a senior technical position, the focus is on technical mentorship rather than people management.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop and verify embedded software for safety-critical electronic systems
- Develop efficient, reliable bare-metal firmware in C for microcontroller-based platforms
- Work closely with hardware engineers to bring up new boards and support hardware integration
- Produce low-level drivers and interface software for peripherals and communication buses
- Support software architecture, requirements capture and detailed technical design
- Plan and coordinate technical activities across the software lifecycle, ensuring delivery against project milestones
- Estimate work packages, identify technical risks and provide regular project progress updates
- Support software planning documentation (e.g. PSAC, SDP, SAS) where applicable
- Perform software integration, debugging and system verification using HIL/SIL and hardware test environments
- Participate in design reviews, code reviews and requirements reviews
- Ensure software is developed in accordance with DO-178C and other applicable aerospace standards
- Mentor and support junior engineers through technical guidance, design discussions and code reviews
- Work collaboratively with systems, electronics, verification and project teams to ensure successful project delivery
Essential Requirements
- Strong commercial experience developing embedded software in C
- Excellent understanding of bare-metal embedded development with minimal or no RTOS abstraction
Strong knowledge of:
- Microcontroller architecture
- Memory management
- Interrupt handling
- Bootloaders
- Experience with ARM Cortex-M or similar microcontroller architectures
- Experience developing low-level device drivers and hardware abstraction layers
- Strong understanding of communication interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART and CAN
- Strong debugging experience using embedded development tools
- Experience with software verification and validation within regulated environments
- Experience with HIL/SIL testing and embedded system integration
- Ability to plan technical work, manage priorities and contribute to successful project delivery
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams
Desirable
- Experience with digital signal processing or motor control applications
- Exposure to MATLAB/Simulink or other modelling tools
- Familiarity with requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS
- Knowledge of version control, CI/CD pipelines and automated embedded testing
- Experience supporting DO-178C or equivalent safety-critical development standards
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems or a related discipline
- 7+ years' experience developing and verifying embedded software in a commercial environment
- Demonstrated experience mentoring less experienced engineers and contributing to the successful delivery of complex embedded software projects
