Job description

We are partnering with a well-established Irish technology and manufacturing organisation operating within the life-safety, connected home and IoT electronics sector. The business develops and manufactures high-reliability electronic products used in residential and connected environments, with a strong focus on innovation, quality and product performance.

As part of continued R&D investment, we are looking for a Senior R&D Engineer to join a highly technical product development environment and play a key role in the design, development and validation of next-generation electronic products.

This is a hands-on engineering position suited to someone who enjoys working across electronics hardware, embedded firmware, PCB design, testing and early-stage technology development.

The Role

You will be involved throughout the R&D lifecycle, from evaluating new technologies and developing early concepts through to detailed design, testing, troubleshooting and product validation.

You will work closely with experienced hardware, firmware, software and product development engineers to develop robust, manufacturable and high-quality electronic products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development and troubleshooting of analogue and digital electronic circuits.
  • Develop and review schematics and PCB designs, supporting prototype build and hardware bring-up.
  • Develop embedded firmware for microcontroller-based systems.
  • Design and develop hardware/software interfaces using technologies such as I2C, SPI, UART and CAN.
  • Develop and improve electronic test methods, test fixtures and measurement approaches.
  • Use laboratory instrumentation to diagnose and solve complex hardware and system-level issues.
  • Investigate emerging technologies and early-stage concepts and assess their technical feasibility.
  • Work closely with wider R&D and product teams to translate technical findings into practical product solutions.
  • Document, analyse and communicate technical investigations, test results and research outcomes.
  • Support product compliance, quality and safety requirements throughout the development process.
  • Continuously improve engineering tools, development processes and test frameworks.
What We're Looking For
  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems or a related discipline.
  • Ideally 5+ years' experience developing embedded electronic products.
  • Strong hands-on experience across electronics hardware and embedded firmware.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB design.
  • Strong understanding of analogue and digital electronics, embedded systems and electronic measurement.
  • Practical experience interfacing hardware and software using protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART or CAN.
  • Experience developing in C/C++ and/or Python would be beneficial.
  • Experience with Altium Designer or a similar PCB design platform is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
  • Good understanding of version control tools such as Git/GitHub/Bitbucket.
  • Experience working on mains-powered products would be advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary R&D teams.
