Job summary

Toast is seeking a Technical Operations Lead to own the end-to-end architecture of our services, data systems, and internal tools. You will design backend services, integrate disparate sources, and drive large projects from design through rollout.

You'll mentor engineers, collaborate with product owners, and build scalable reporting for engineering health, tooling spend, and ROI, replacing manual processes with auditable, productized analytics.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience designing, building, and operating production full-stack systems.
• Strong backend, API integration, SQL and data modeling skills.
• Proficiency in a modern web frontend stack to prototype visualizations.
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Kotlin, or TypeScript).
• Proven ability to drive significant projects to completion from design to rollout, with non-engineering stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the team’s technical lead, owning the end-to-end architecture and direction of services, internal tools, and data systems.
• Design and build backend services and integrations with clear APIs and data contracts.
• Partner with Product Owner to identify opportunities and collaborate on end-to-end solutions.
• Build backend that enables role-based reporting on engineering health, AI and tooling spend, and ROI.
• Own quality, reliability, and monitoring for business-critical reporting.
• Mentor less experienced engineers and elevate the team through design reviews and feedback.

• The Technical Operations team makes Toast’s engineering measurable. We connect tool and resource usage, engineering metrics, and customer outcomes into a single, trusted picture that executives, engineering managers, and developers use every day
• We are a small, highly leveraged team. We index heavily into agentic engineering: AI agents are part of how we design, build, test, and operate our systems, and we expect you to push that frontier with us
• Serve as the team’s technical lead, owning the end-to-end architecture and direction of our services, internal tools, and data systems, and driving significant projects from design through rollout
• Design and build the backend services and integrations that ingest engineering, tooling, and cost signals from multiple source systems, with clear APIs and data contracts rather than manual extracts
• Partner with our Product Owner to identify and define the biggest opportunities for impact, and collaborate with your teammates on end-to-end solutions
• Build the back-end that enables role-based reporting on engineering health, AI and tooling spend and ROI, and cost and capitalization, replacing recurring manual processes with durable, auditable, productized tools & analytics
• Own quality, reliability, and operational monitoring for business-critical reporting that leaders at every level depend on
• Mentor less experienced engineers and up-level the team through design reviews, constructive feedback, and agent-assisted engineering practices
