Job summary

Our client is looking for a Staff Engineer to join a growing engineering team delivering large-scale backend platforms used by millions of users. As a Staff Engineer / Senior Engineer, you'll design, build and optimise resilient backend services using Scala and modern functional programming techniques.

Working within cross-functional engineering teams, you'll contribute to architecture decisions, improve engineering standards and deliver highly available cloud-based applications running on AWS and Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable backend services using Scala.
• Build resilient microservices deployed on Kubernetes.
• Create performant REST APIs and distributed systems.
• Participate in architecture and technical design discussions.
• Drive software quality through testing, code reviews and CI/CD.
• Investigate and resolve complex production issues.
• Produce technical documentation, RFCs and root cause analyses.
• Mentor engineers and promote engineering best practices.
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering and Design teams.
• Participate in an on-call rota supporting production systems.

Skills & Experience

You'll ideally have experience with:

• 7+ years commercial software engineering experience.
• Strong Scala development experience using the Typelevel ecosystem (Cats, Cats Effect, http4s, fs2, Circe) or ZIO.
• Deep understanding of functional programming principles.
• Experience with Haskell, PureScript or similar functional languages is also highly desirable.
• Designing scalable REST APIs and distributed systems.
• Kubernetes and microservices architecture.
• Production support, observability and incident management.
• Strong software design and problem-solving skills.
